So I just committed to Cal yesterday (yay!), but I’m kinda stressed because I have like 4 days to register for housing and I don’t have a roommate. So my question is, is it okay to to just apply for a dorm (I’m thinking a double in Unit 1 or 2) and get a random roommate? Or is that sketch? It seems way less stressful to just get a random roommate, but I don’t know how common that is so I’m worried I’ll end up with someone I’m not at all compatible with. Any insight into whether or not that’s a “safe” option? And if not, how do you recommend finding a roommate? Also, if anyone currently at or recently graduated from Berkeley has any general advice, I’d love to hear it!! Thanks!
My son was in a triple in the Units his freshmen year with random roommates and it worked out great. It is my impression that most people go with random roommates freshmen year.
There is nothing wrong with random roommates. Mine had them freshman year, one she didn’t get along until I saw something from the counseling office sent home, I had to ask her. But she worked through the problem. The same girl she chose to share a room with this year while she had a choice of a single in an apartment with 6 other girls. It’s a good skill to acquire that could be useful in life, dealing with people good or bad.
