Random roommates?

Hi! :D

I was thinking whether I should find a roommate or go random. I am alright dorming with someone I don’t know and I think random is pretty exciting! However, the only thing I am afraid of random is that I may end up with a person who is a terror to live with. For example, a person who take drugs, or gets drunk often, or is a slut or even steals. I know those are pretty drastic and the chances of getting a roommate like that is really low. However, I have heard of such stories where people have ended which such roommates. I know we can transfer rooms if we are not happy but that will be very troublesome, especially since I am planning to share a mini fridge & a microwave oven with my roommate.

So, I want to hear from current students how your or friend’s random roommate turn out to be? Any interesting stories?

Thanks! :D

Nearly everyone, students and parents alike, advise me to go with someone I know. However everyone I know wants to go random, so I’m kinda stuck.

If I could, I’d take the safe option and go with someone I know. Best case scenario if you go random is you get someone just as compatible as someone you already know, and thats if you get lucky on the 50/50 toss up.

I’m going to be freshman this year too, so all my knowledge is secondhand and obviously biased though.

A couple of my friends that are attending the same school are dorming with each other. And I can already tell who won’t be compatible roommates…all of them.

If you’re worried, look for a Program that you would feel comfortable in, like those career focused ones in Health Science, or the Quiet Room with early hours. Usually people who sign up for those programs are responsible and hard working.

Don’t forget Substance Free!

actually the more I think about it the more I like this idea

You’ll be far less likely to encounter someone who engages in those… activities under this program, I think.

oooh okay. so. stories. From my school, two people got random roommates (well, one was rooming with someone she knew in elementary school??? but she hardly knew her so I’d count it as random), four roomed with each other (doubles), and I roomed with someone I knew plus one random roommate.

My random roommate turned out pretty nice. But for the other two, theirs were kind of disastrous… one drank a lot and stashed alcohol in their room. As for the other’s, one brought back girl(s?) and slept with her/them, one was just a jerk. Both of my friends eventually transferred rooms (one actually pretty recently even though it’s almost the end of the school year haha, he likes his new roommate though). My other friends who roomed with each other have no problems.

Another girl I met here transferred because she didn’t want to stay in Cuarto despite a nice roommate. Her new one liked to have guys over, they had disputes over noise and lights and other stuff; the new roommate actually ended up transferring and my friend now has the whole room to herself.

Well, I was thinking of choosing a theme as you said. But in the end, I don’t think I will. I am planning to put program as my last choice on my housing apps.

Hahah. Picky I know.

@Phishy
Thanks for the story! Those two roommates you mentioned are the ones I do not want at all.

If anyone else have stories about random roommates, good or bad, please share them with me! I still have to decide whether I want to go random or find a roommate.

Thanks Serafina, I might just go and change my preferences for that.
