finding an academically elite school with great choir program?

In my college search process, I have largely hit a bump in the road.
I’ve worked the past 3 years of high school as hard as I have been able, with 10 AP classes, 2nd in my class, possibly national merit, ec’s, etc. So I’ve definitely been looking into some very elite schools, with Columbia and Georgia Tech being top choices for Engineering/maybe pre-med. But most of these schools I’ve noticed don’t offer much variety with choirs. I’ve grown up surrounded by music, going to Allstate, taking lessons, singing in choirs my whole life and Choosing between majoring in music (VP) or science was hard for me, so right now I’m just trying to find a school that’s academically rigorous but also has a great choir/music program and possibly options for double majors/minors (however not necessary).
I know of several instate schools that have pretty good choir programs and offers for vocal scholarships for non-music majors, which is ideal, however I’ve largely been trying to stay away from Georgia schools with the exception of GT or possibly UGA.
However, If anyone has suggestions I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Glee and is alive and well at USC:

Yes, I was going to say USC too. You can audition for student groups (as noted by @SeattleTW) participate in school choirs (they have several). Look into Thornton School of Music at USC. Plus, if you like musical theatre, you can audition for those productions as well. It is a great place for the musically inclined

St. Olaf. Fantastic choir, great education. Produces tons of PhD’s.

Good luck!

A Capella singing to Yale is as Football is to Alabama

Carnegie Mellon, Rice and Northwestern all have highly rated engineering and excellent music departments. For Out of State publics, Indiana University at Bloomington and University of Michigan have stellar programs.

University of Rochester has the famed Eastman School of Music–but you’ll need to check what opportunities you’ll have there as a non-music major. I have read mixed things about that.

Finally, although it isn’t a name-brand school like the others you mentioned, the University of North Texas has some of the very best music anywhere in the country–especially known for jazz. They also have a full slate of engineering majors to choose from. UNT offers a full tuition (or nearly full?) scholarship for national merit finalists.

Indiana doesn’t offer engineering. Michigan has excellent engineering and conservatory level music programs:

Its Men’s Glee Club, over 155 years old, is quite renowned:

I was thinking St Olaf and Oberlin but they don’t offer engineering (though do have good science programs). U of Cincinnati has both (one of the top vocal schools in the country). A smaller less exclusive school with a great voice program and strong engineering is Wright State in OH.

The OP is looking for, “academically elite” schools.

^ I think UC is as good as GT for engineering and better for music. And St Olaf and Oberlin are considered elite LACs.

Thanks everyone for your input! I’ll definitely make sure to check out those schools!

“I think UC is as good as GT for engineering and better for music.”

I think GT is better than UC for engineering. I agree about Cincinnati being better for music.

Westminster Choir College is right down the street from Princeton. There may be cross-registration opportunities available to you, and even if there’s not, Princeton has a cappella.

Tufts! Tufts has about 289 a capella groups, including one that exclusively sings Disney music, if you’re into that. My friend is in their choir and absolutely loves it. It’s stronger academically than a few of the schools mentioned (why would anybody bring Wright State into this conversation? It’s a commuter school with an acceptance rate of 96 percent. The University of Cincinnati is hardly “elite” either).

@Qwerty568, Wright State has an amazing vocal program which draws people from across the country (auditioned). They also have an excellent engineering program with top internship possibilities with the Air Force Research Laboratories at Wright Patterson AFB. Try to keep up.

Try to keep up?
Do you REALLY think that Wright State was what OP had in mind? An OOS student with 10 AP classes, salutatorian, looking into Columbia and Georgia Tech?

And I specifically stated it was less selective. It’s up to the OP to decide what is useful into.

@tylerfrenchfrye, If you’re flexible on engineering, I’d suggest you look at Williams – excellent sciences, excellent music department. Plenty of performance opportunities for non-majors and double majoring is common.
