My friend told me that you need at least one year of fine arts (theater, dance etc) to apply to Berkeley. I tried looking on the UC application website and could not find a thing on it. Does anyone know if this is true? I hope it isnt because I have no room in my senior schedule to take a fine arts class...

It’s true. It’s part of the UC’s a-g requirements. You need a visual/performing arts class.

make it happen otherwise you don’t even qualify. (plus, you should have thought about it freshman year if you had any intentions to apply to the UCs)

this sucks… can I get a quick chance to see if it is even worth changing my senior schedule for? Because this is the only school I’m looking at that requires fine arts

UW 3.8
W 4.3

Out-Of-State

ACT 34

AP Human Geo 5
AP US History 4
AP Physics B 4

Senior year will be taking 4 APs

Engineering Major

Summer Camp Counselor 30 Hrs/Wk for past 3 years
NHS
Future Engineers Club
100+ Hrs Math Peer Tutor
JV Lacrosse
POtential Engineering internship, going to hear back in couple days
Dont know if this counts but when I was in 3rd-6th grade I took enrichment classes at Northwestern…

I’m in the same position as you, does anyone know what counts as performing/visual arts?

I’ve heard speculation that for out of state students the fine arts requirement isn’t as big of a deal because while an arts class is required for California students, UCs cannot regulate the curriculum of students from other states. Take it with a grain of salt, I don’t know if it has any validity but I’ve read it on this forum before.

That being said, if I were you I’d rearrange the schedule so I had a fine arts class, or at least make a phone call to find out more about OOS and fine arts requirement. Your test scores and GPA are pretty competitive, so I think you should apply… and you wouldn’t want to look back thinking, “What if?”

mclax, I think you’d probably have a decent chance. What’s your current senior schedule?

Wong, anything like band, dance, acting, drawing/painting, choir, imaging, or photography should count as a VPA.

My HS had a booklet that told us which class the UCs considered to fulfill their A-G requirements.

Your stats are good and I wouldn’t risk it by having not taken 1-year of Arts. I would take the “better safe than sorry” approach here. I would rather take 3 AP classes (or drop one of your non-AP classes) to fulfill that requirement if applying to the UCs is something you want to do.

My senior schedule is

AP Calc AB
AP Chem
AP Gov/Micro (semester each)
Accelerated English (Step below AP)
Engineering Graphics

I would drop Engineering Graphics because even though it is Engineering, which is what I want to major in, it is not a core class and I’m only taking it because it was an interesting elective. The only reason I’m still skeptical about this is because for me, Berkeley was kind of an afterthought until recently, so I dont know if I would really regret it if I just didnt apply

ringopuppers heard correctly. I’m out of state and went through this whole thing last year. I contacted admissions etc, and was told that what I had was fine. Granted, I’d taken about 4 semesters total of classes that could sort-of count as fine arts, just never a year long course. They may be less lenient if you’ve never taken any sort of fine arts class, but I wouldn’t be completely discouraged. Contact admissions in any way that you can and see whether you can fly with what you have.

Ringopuppers im basically right. I’m out of state and I panicked when the site said they require a year of the SAME fine art. My school reqs a year but you can take different subjects…anyway I emailed or called and they said how its not that big of as deal out of state just try your best to fit one in. I was accepted.
