Finishing in Four Years

I have read a few things about Rutgers lately that seem to imply that it can be difficult for an undergraduate student to finish a major in four years and graduate.

Does anybody have any opinion or knowledge of this?

Statistically, I think most college students anywhere don't finish in 4 years. It's certainly not impossible though, just make sure you hit the ground running your freshman year.

What are you majoring in?

The curriculum in most cases is planned for four years. It's definitely possible. If you are really motivated and can handle 19/20 credits a semester and take summer courses you could even finish a semester early :P

Well, honestly, I don't know what I want to major in. I can fairly well narrow myself down to chemistry, physics, or linguistics, or something related to any of those fields.

That's why I'm afraid. I cannot say now what I want to do for sure, and I guess that's gonna hold me back.

Go to rutgers.edu and check out the undergraduate curriculum for these majors. Most are planned out for four years.

Honestly it should not be difficult to finish at all. As long as you can handle 120 credits over 4 years (which is about 15 a semester, which is not hard at all).

I'm doing 17 credits this semester and it isn't too terrible.

It really isn't that hard. I think the statistics include part time students. My friend is double majoring in history/political science in 4 years. I am double majoring as well. I think I will be done with my history major requirements in 3 years and my other major in 4. 4 years is definitely doable.

Dear Poster: Don't worry too much about what your major will be as an entering freshman. You have until the end of sophomore year to declare one. In the meantime, any class you sign up for will count either towards your major (later on) or as an elective. So take what you are interested in.

Try to find a good advisor. It could be a professor with whom you click, in a subject in which you are interested. Discuss your future plans with him/her. It is definitely possible to graduate in four years.
