First AP exam - how do I prepare?

I’m a Freshman and currently taking AP US History. I really want to do well on the exam, at the least getting a 3 and hopefully getting a 4.

Right now I have:

America: Past and Present (8th Edition, AP Edition) - my teacher hates this book and feels it leaves out important facts.
United States History - Preparing for the AP test (2010 Revision, AMSCO)

What other materials do I need to study? I know there is a new test, so these supplies are probably out of date. Feel free to leave links and study tips!

Thanks so much!

This is just from my personal experience, I liked the Crash Course series for all of my history classes. I like that they don’t barrage you with info the way that a textbook would. But, they don’t go too in-depth the way that Barron or Princeton does. Anyways, good luck with your AP test in May!

Skim over a not so thick review book from left to right and break it up into 2-3 time periods to cover over 2-3 days.
As you read, think of the items that might be pertinent to an essay.

You don’t.

Just kidding. Seriously, your teacher should have been training you for it since the beginning of the school year. The individual preparation is up to you. Use the provided textbook. I find that AMSCO and the American Pageant are good resources. Crash Course is good too, like the above poster said. Honestly, just review your work and read what is helpful. If you worked hard this year, you probably won’t need to read that much.

In addition to taking APUSH in school and using the American Pageant textbook, I used AMSCO, which really helped, I think. I made a 4 on the exam.

Key to doing well, in my opinion, is to be very detailed in your essays. They love it when you’re detailed and give lots of examples. Shows that you know what you’re doing.

I also used this website religiously before any tests in APUSH, and I like to think that it helped me on the exam, too: http://www.historyteacher.net/USQuizMainPage.htm.

Really, you just have to know the facts. And be able to analyze to write good essays. I mean, not that that’s easy, but it’s not like you have to make inferences or memorize formulas to do equations.

Crash course on YouTube is not too bad in review of some key topics. My school has Five steps to a 5 booklet for every AP class. Haven’t looked at theta one but kids and teachers at my school say it’s great.

New exam this year man. Get AMSCO 2015. It’s brilliant for new-type questions. The new exam is much easier from what I’ve seen on the released practice test

Take practice tests, do practice essays.
