Hi music people – My son auditioned for all-state band and was selected for first chair percussionist (battery). Is this considered impressive for someone who will not be a music major, but may choose to minor in music? I would imagine that students who are hoping to become professional ALL have accomplishments like that. But for the ordinary applicant, would this be something that stands out on an application?
It’s an EC with a nice bonus, but there are lot of students who have this on their resumes. There are 50 states, and probably at least 50 honor bands chosen (some big states might have 3 or 4), orchestras, choirs.
It’s nice. Congrats to him.
Thanks. So he is one of about 50-100 state-wide, first-chair percussionists in the country.
Congrats to him for his hard work and accomplishments, and I hope he is enjoying himself. As others have said, there is an honors band in each state and a first chair in each band too
Is he doing a music supplement? (music resume, recording/video, letters of recommendation from music teachers or directors) He may not need to, but just wondering…What year is he in? Does he play only in school ensembles or does he do music outside of school?
If he wants to minor in music is he aware that that may not be a performance path? It will help to look very carefully at each school. And of course he can play in extracurriculars anywhere.
Thanks. He’s a junior in HS. He does music outside of school too. He spends most of the day every Sunday with a private percussion ensemble with a well-known music director. He also has a private teacher. He’ll probably do a music supplement, and I know that his HS band director will be one of his LORs.
I know we have to look carefully into the various options.
It’ll be valuable at colleges that pay attention to music, such as St Olaf. Also nice to have for Yale.
