First Chances thread

I'm an Asian living in a very small and rural town where we still have cows on the side of streets. Rarely does anyone from my high school attend somewhere prestigious; most just to go the state school. My family is by all means not rich and the being from a small town, my school doesn't offer much opportunities. With that said, I was wondering if I might be able to go to Johns Hopkins RD

SAT (old): 1390 (710M)(680V)
SAT (new): 2130 (690M)(740V)(700W)
(new): 2000

SAT II Bio E:720; Math Level II: 720; Bio M :690

Gpa: Approximately 92.3 =3.7

Class Rank: 17 out of 245, top 10%

School only offers Ap English in Junior year.

Ap English: 4

Senior year taking AP: English, Psychology, Calc, and Probability/Stats.

My EC's are all right. I do play Jv baseball and do have other leaderships.

Do I have a chance in hell?

Check out the numbers for those who got accepted?
Some people with lower stats than you got in.

BUT only thing going against you is that you're RD and its going to be harder i'm assuming, because ED acceptance pool is soo large

Yes, you have a shot.

You fit their profile, statistically speaking. Don't let anyone tell you that it's a particular "reach". Any top tier (top 15) school like Hopkins is a "reach" for everyone.

If you care to get in, do several things:

First off, interest. Contact the admissions officer in charge of your region, let them know your name, why you're interested, and be sure to ask a question or two so they have something to respond with. Send them an e-mail once every month, twice at most.

Second, make sure your essays have a holistic value. By this, I mean make sure that your application shows how you are broadly achieved, but also show how all of your achievements tie together into a singular focused goal (think high aspirations with this goal).

Aside from that, just be diligent and make sure your mid-year report is solid. Good luck.

statistically speaking you definetly have a chance, it depends on your recs, essays, ecs, ect. as well

hmmm... i really think we should make one giant thread, just for threads and not clog the boards

Thanks people. I'm having a lot of difficulty in writing the essay($10 essay). What are some examples that I can write about?

theres a thread with examples of 10$ essays that people wrote. Obviously you shouldnt use one of these since people have already used them. Basically be creative and tell as much as you can about yourself in one page. I suggest don't use anything ridiculously humanitarian like create world peace ect. (although i dont know how you would do that with 10 dollars). Be creative, tell about yourself, have fun with it. Thats all JHU wants from an essay.

easy, i cured cancer with 3 dollars why can't u have world peace with 10

youre special :)

i agree with what people are saying in that make your $10 essay personal. And don't try to describe a time consuming event in 500-700 words. a scene or two with lots of detail and personal quality is good essay in my opinion. show them who you are and how you perceive things.

oops, i went like 600 words encompassing a day of dreaming, and a night of practicality

My 10 dollar essay is over 1,000 wrds
