Just wondering what the gist of the first email contact should be from a student to a coach for XC? (Student is a junior.) I'm thinking it is important to ask a question or two (to hopefully receive a reply email).

Does this email contact essentially replace the recruiting questionnaire?

The first XC meet is in 2 weeks. When would be the best time for S to begin making contact with coaches/filling out questionnaires?

Thanks.

First, introduce the student (Name, school). Briefly list some notable times/achievements. Mention any big upcoming races (leagues, states, etc). If you’re really thinking about the school I good question to ask might be about coming on campus for a visit, or a little easier, meeting with the coach if you’re on campus for a preview day sort of event.

If you don’t want to ask about a preview day/campus visit (which I would recommend doing and making sure your athlete spends time with the team during said visit) you could also ask about team expectations, training philosophy, etc. A nice gesture would be to close out the email with a positive comment regarding an upcoming meet for the school (ex. Good luck with your teams first invitational on the 17th).

Good luck. College XC/Track is a freaking blast. If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me a message.
