First Day Back

Were they all on sports teams?

actually i've already met several black people and none are on sports teams...

Basically, we can agree that UCLA is racially unbalanced.

My first day was good. My professors were interesting and the classes were fun and appeared to be challenging. The campus and the architecture looks more beautiful than ever. UCLA students appear to be very motivated, hard working and intelligent. Overall, everything was great except for the incidents in Bruinwalk with the activists and the beggers. Most of them were polite, but they wouldn't stop talking and I tried my best to stay polite, but try to get away at the same time. There was this one Black guy in a suit who conned $3 out of me (he tried to get $20). Apart from this, UCLA is great and it looks like its going to be a very enjoyable two years. Oh yeah, and the dining hall food is delicious!

I have a professor from Luxemborg.... BOOYA

if you want to meet black people, go to the In-N-Out on gayley....

switching topics, boelter hall is the worst planned/designed buildings I have ever been in....the room numbering system doesn't make any sense, four elevators go to four different places, elevators are slow as hell and putting the library on the 8th floor is just plain dumb.

My roomie and I were looking for her classes in Boelter (she has three) and we found one of her classes on the 5th floor and an elevator right by it that takes her to the 9th and 3rd where her other classes are and I told her "Just take this elevator every time and go the same way everytime or else you will get lost."

So I'm thinking just pick a path you know and never ever wander. ;)

i love ucla

yeah, you must learn to avoid that guy

anyone know a nice route from de neve to bunche? i went through bruinwalk...not the smartest move...

so the black guy in the suit is infamous... guess all us freshmen have our rite of passage with him

tips for avoiding those guys on bruinwalk who try to stop you:

You'll need
1) shades
2) an angry look on your face
3) if the above 2 dont work, ignore em, look straight, and keep walking

its mean, but it works :)

^ i did all 3 today worked pretty well haha

You mean this guy?
http://ucla.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2200441895

^

LMAO!
Someone actually made a Myspace dedicated to him...
Now I know who you guys are talking about.
I came in contact with him well into the summer, but haven't seen him since then.

AK1031, take Charles E. Young Drive to North Campus (around Royce). It is a good and empty alternative to Bruin Walk.

^
Oops I meant to say a Facebook profile.
But who knows. Maybe there is a Myspace profile as well.

flopsy

Yeah, thats the guy. I think I'm the only person who actually stopped and gave him money. The rest of the students just walked off.

In my time here, I have learned that the absolute best way to avoid obnoxious bruin walk people is to have your headphones on AND be reading a book/newspaper/etc. or pretending to text on your phone...basically anything that utilizes both of your hands and requires you to be looking at it as well. Therefore, you can't see or hear the peddlers and your hands are full so you have no way to grab all the junk they want to hand you. They don't even attempt to approach me anymore...unless of course they are particularly obnoxious...in which case they need a good punch in the face (not that I have ever punched any of them, of course...it's a satisfying thought, though).

Sorry, but you are wrong. The BEST way to avoid them is to take Charles E. Young. :p
