First day of college

Just a random question but what actually do you do on the first day of college. And when you move in what do you do the rest of time- do you just go around making friends or are there orientations.

Thanks

This is how I remember my first few days on campus, though I might have jumbled it up a little. A lot happened in that first week.

Day One (Friday) – Freshmen Move In
Your first day away from school is move in day. It starts with moving into your room. When you pull up to your College, the welcome wagon comes and helps point you to your college lounge where you receive your key and are escorted to your room by your RA. From there, you return to your car and the welcome wagon helps carry all your things to your room for you. You may meet your roommates at this time, you may not. It depends on when they arrive. After you move in, it’s time for the family farewell breakfast where you say goodbye to your parents, and you send them on their way.

After your parents are gone, you must return to your college lounge for a required college informational session where you learn about procedure and protocol. You’re also introduced to your college staff, RHD and RAs. After the college meeting, there is a floor meeting where you meet with your individual RA and freshman floormates. Upper-clansmen won’t move in until Sunday. After all these meetings, you return to your room to discuss basic boundaries with your roommates. You discuss things like when you can have friends over, if you’re okay with alcohol, and just get to know your roommates. After this, you’re required to attend an UGC specific event, such as kite flying in ITS.

After you’re done with your UGC event, you’re directed to one of the three residential dinning centers (Mendelsohn and H go to Campus Connection, Tabler and Roth go to Roth Dining Center, Kelly and Roosevelt go to Kelly Dining Center) for a free, all you can eat meal. It’s very uncommon to be able to eat as much as you want for free, so don’t let it go to waste! After lunch, you have some free time to explore the campus. This is when you’re supposed to get everything in order. You make sure your IDs, keys are working. You make sure the cable and phones are working. And most important, you walk around meeting other freshmen who live in your area.

Later in the night, you’re required to go to the New Student Convocation in the stadium. Here, president Stanley will give a speech and you learn Seawolf mannerisms from Wolfie. After, there’s a carnival in the SAC where you’re given free bags, umbrellas, or cups. They also have video games, cotton candy, popcorn, ball room dancing, face painting, necklace making, llama chasing and a condom casino.

Day Two (Saturday)
You wake up somewhere. You don’t know where. There’s someone sleeping under. Oh ****, and they’re snoring! You just spent your first night at college, and you realized that one of your roommates snore and the other one parties all night and isn’t back yet. That’s alright though, because you’ll eventually be detripled.

After the carnival, you have no activities until noon. So, you kind of fiddle around with the light switches in the bathroom, test the showers out and just explore the campus. I would like to note something however (for corridor colleges only), NEVER FORGET TO BRING YOUR THINGS FROM OUT OF THE SHOWER, THEY WILL 100% BE STOLEN BY SOME ****** BAG WHO SELLS YOUR SHAMPOO AT GARAGE SALES… OR WORSE. At around 12:30-1:00, you have another UGC specific activity. With ITS, it’s building a giant knex theme park. You then have another free lunch just after. You’re not escorted this time, so you have to find your own way there. I decided that I didn’t want to eat at the same place as last time, so I went to Roth to meet some friends. Oh, and I got extremely lost doing so. I don’t recommend doing that.

You’re then (more or less) free for the rest of the day. For the Honor’s College, WISE and University Scholars, there’s another free dinner that you have to participate in. Wear your best clothes for it, because it’s more of an official occasion, I believe. There’s another carnival/dance tonight, but I never went to it.

Day Three (Sunday) – Everyone Else Moves In
At this point, you’re a seawolf and you’re no different than anyone else. There are no activities for today, but you get to meet all your floormates/suitemates and other upper classmen. This time is very important, as people tend to stick to the people they meet within the first few weeks of school.

Day Four (Monday)
This is your first day of class, and most of you are on your way to dropping out or transferring. The rest of you are on your way to a series of changes in your major, wasted credits and graduating late due to department budget cuts. Eventually, you might (about 40% of you) end up with a B.A., B.S. or M.B.A. at the end of 4 years.

@keleso great description :)

wow thanks for description keleso :)

lmao @ Monday’s schedule. sounds pretty legit (my brother)

It is NOT FREE. The school slaps you with a $80 opening weekend meal fee in SOLAR the same day. Surprise! (When you check later haha).

Something not for the first couple days, but for the first few weeks, expect fire alarms going off, because some idiot freshmen or not will set it off, either by smoking in their room like a idiot, blowing the holy %!% out their stove(on the first day in my building where we have kitchen suites) or generally doing something stupid.

Oi, you forgot B.E. or are we engineering students that much better than the others? :P

The orientation is basically a time to socialize and make new friends. All of the move in day activities/weekend are scheduled so you can make friends. There are a few serious sessions that you need to go to but there’s a carnival, a movie, and football game that are usually a lot of fun.

I heard that you cant get into any of the other resident halls without the card for their building but if you want to go eat in another resident hall suppose I was living in Roth and I wanted to eat at Kelly can i do that?

yea dining halls are open for everyone. you just need the card for dorms.
