First dog update, 24-36 bites

I was requested to put this update in a new thread.

The majority of big, working dogs wouldn’t do well in such environment with so many people running around and ever changing faces. Commander likely felt uneasy and threatened by all this craziness around him. I currently don’t have a dog, only cats. Of all of them, only one would have done well in the White House. She is laser-focused on getting food and doesn’t give a bleep about what is happening around her. I have to push her out of the way when I vacuum the rug where she plopped down
all other cats scatter at the first sight of the vacuum!

This issue of misbehaving pets is not limited to the WH. A 2 yr old working dog needs a lot of exercise and consistent training. Not a great pet to bring to work - at all!

No doubt many animals would not. That is why there are local laws regarding dangerous animals; even DC has a law and claims they would have responded had the matter been reported to them. Apparently jurisdiction isnt clear over the matter due to federal preeminence.

I can not imagine how any adult could permit a pet to attack 24 people; I support civil and criminal liability against such adults. Animals are not supposed to repeatedly attack people with no consequences

During a swearing-in ceremony for White House staff, President Joe Biden told employees he’d fire them “on the spot” if he heard they treated others with disrespect.

Commander seems to have been pretty “disrespectful” but he seems to have received over a dozen second chances.

Anyone else really tired of seeing dogs in restaurants and stores? I am. Do people really need to take their pets everywhere? (I am not talking about service dogs).

This really bothers me. German Shepherds can be wonderful dogs, but the reality is that they are on many insurance policies’ prohibited dog list, so obviously, it’s known that they can be aggressive. The Bidens clearly love having German Shepherds, but they’ve already had a problem dog there, that they had to rehome, after it bit several people. To not have done the same thing with this one, after the first bite, was just so wrong of them. 24 to 36 bites? And it’s not as if secret service personnel can say, hey wait, crate the dog before I come in.

Are these breaking the skin, causing bleeding kind of bites? It does seem very odd to keep the dog around people if that’s what’s happening. I don’t get it.

So many people are blind when it comes to their dogs. My spouse and I were walking in a park, minding our own business, when an off-lease dog (leashing your dog 100% of the time is required in our city, so this was illegal) started chasing us, barking aggressively. I immediately stood still and faced away from the dog, as I have heard you should. The dog kept coming at me and hit me with his body (did not bite, thank goodness.) Lunged at me another time, still barking aggressively. My husband came over, and stuck his leg in between me and the dog, did not touch the dog. The owner ran over and accused him of “kicking” her dog. Husband said he hadn’t kicked him, and that the dog was attacking us, and please put him on leash. She said “He wouldn’t hurt anyone, he only attacked you because he was afraid of you because both of you are wearing [baseball] caps” and “He had reason to be afraid because you’re the kind of people who kick dogs.”

In fairness why were you wearing hats made of beef😀

I am not sure where you got the 24-36 bites info! The article says there were a number of aggressive incidents- which would include things like barking, lunging at people, snapping at them without contact, rushing up to them, etc. I haven’t read anything to indicate there were more than a few biting incidents. That being said, this is CLEARLY a situation where the dog should have been removed from the White House after the first bite and retrained/rehoused, and not returned to the White House. And if a serious bite incident happened again with this dog, euthanized. German shepherds can do a great deal of damage if not trained properly.

The article said 2 inside sources estimated the number of incidents to between 2 and 3 dozen; 1 required hospitalization of the victim; several were treated by the White House medical staff. One female secret service agent had to pick up a chair to physically ward off the attacking dog, per published reports.
CNN reported the behavior of the initial 11 episodes, at least, as “biting incidents”

I actually sympathize with one bite. The second requires action. 3 or more is culpable negligence by the owner.

Commander didn’t need any second chances, he had a Presidential pardon.

My dog was attacked twice by off leash dogs. Thankfully, both times my H was with us and managed to intervene before any damage was done. After that I started walking with mace. Years ago my small Boston Terrier was sitting on our front lawn, leashed to a stake in the ground and the neighbors 120 pound dog ran over and tackled her “to play”. The result was she had to have an eye removed. I made them pay for it and they had the nerve to be angry about it.
Sometimes I just really dislike people.

our dog bit the mailman once. :frowning: he got put under house arrest by the humane society; the post office sued us, insurance got involved. that was 22 years ago. Are there not rules about dogs who bite anymore?

back then it wasn’t called re-homing; but we did adopt him out to a single person who lived on a farm. (australian shepherd). She loved having him.

I, too, sympathize with 1 bite. But I think it requires action anyway. The dog needs a different environment.

I can sympathize with one bite too, but too many times owners of biting dogs hide the truth. The first dog that bit my dog was in our neighborhood - the owner was all apologies, said the dog got out by accident, came by to check in my dog etc. We didn’t report it. Come to find out it had bitten several other dogs and one child - and no one reported it!
The second attack the owner was all apologies, this never happens - sorry, I said, but I’m reporting it.
