Is being a first generation college student, like myself, a hook? If its not, then I don't have any hooks at all...

The vast majority of applicants aren’t hooked.

Use the Search function for hook and you will find several threads with excellent definitions.

Can someone tell me if I would count as first-generation for college admissions purposes? I’ve heard different things from different people. Some people say you’re first-generation if neither of your parents has a bachelor’s degree, which is true for me. But other people say I’m not because other people in my family do have college degrees.

One of my grandmothers went to college. She had a master’s degree and she died around 1970.
My dad has an associate’s degree and my mom did not go to college.

Some places don’t care whether an applicant is “first-generation” at all.

Among colleges and universities that do care, they don’t all have the same standard.

Nobody can tell you absolutely whether you qualify as “first-generation.” But you’ll never have to answer that question explicitly, either. You’ll list information about your parents, including their higher education, if any. Individual colleges and universities will use that information according to their individual policies.
