First Generation Immigrants = hook?

Yes? No?
My mom heard it had a slight advantage. I imagine it can't be too significant.

What about english as a second language? Is it true that colleges might cut some slack for those who have lower CR or writing SAT scores? And what would the age limit be for a language barrier to be considered significant?

-___- bump

Not really… maybe. A hook is something big, like being an URM, doing something famous, or sometimes legacy (but most of the time not for legacy, not really used much).

I suppose hook isn’t quite the right word. I was just wondering if it had any advantage or disadvantage, no matter how slight.

It’s not a ‘hook’ but it may help that you bring diversity of perspective to the institution and yes, if English is not the language you speak at home, then it gets taken into account. It really depends on where you are coming from. If your parents are Indian or Chinese professionals, you aren’t going to get any help by being first generation because there are so many students in this category. If your parents are European, you might be able to make a case for a bringing a unique cultural perspective.
