So I just found out I am first generation immigrant going to college

Is this something worthy of updating Colleges with?
I mean, this isn’t a first generation college or anything, just first generation immigrant going to college.
I have listed myself as a regular applicant because I thought first generation immigrant wasn’t anything special, but someone told me it is worth mentioning.
Any opinions?

first generation immigrant is not really worth mentioning…if it meant something, it would mean that all the asian americans with immigrant parents would get a special boost in the admissions process which is definitely not the case.

No, I don’t think you would update for that. It isn’t that uncommon. First to college is more of a target group for colleges.

alrighty thanks, just wanted to make sure, cuz I was positive it wasnt really a hook but some person was saying it.

I think it is very important to some people as far as their identity goes, or to explain more recently learning english, for example and if that was the case it likely would have ended up in your application. But you are right, it isn’t a hook. And it isn’t a target population like 1st gen college, URM etc.

First generation kids of immigrant parents who came to the US on PhD student or skilled worker visas are probably heavily overrepresented among college students (which should not be surprising).
