First-generation student?

My Dad only has his high school diploma, but my Mom has taken college classes online. She has earned no sort of degree, but because she enrolled in school online, that ruins any chance of me getting aid for being a "first generation student", doesn't it?

I don’t know what it does, but “first gen” doesn’t mean that much, especially if you’re not low income.

Well for example, Alabama offers a $5k/yr scholarship for it, so…

It will vary by school. And it can sometimes mean special mentoring programs, scholarships, specialized advising.

Some schools consider you first generation if neither parent graduated from college, some disqualify if parents attended college.

From another thread:

You’re going to have to ask the school how they define it. For most it’s whether or not they’ve completed a Bachelor’s degree. BUT most makes no difference to an individual school.

And as m2ck said, it usually makes no difference unless coupled with another factor.

From Alabama’s website:

You most likely don’t qualify.

^^^
he’d also have to be an Alabama resident, submit FAFSA and demonstrate financial need.

But, you’re right, it says “no education beyond high school.”
