My biological mother and father never attended college. My step-father has attended college and earned a degree. Am I still eligble to be a first generation college student? I’m a sophomore in high school, but would still like to find out.
First you should know that they won’t ask you if you are first gen to college at all. What they ask is Mother, what level of education completed, then Father, what level of education completed. I don’t recall that they will ask education of step parents.
Thank you! I would like to incorporate this topic into some of essays so this is helpful.
Don’t use prime real estate trying to incorporate it into some of your essays. Being first gen really does not make much of a difference in admissions unless it is combined with other factors; low income/poverty, high achieving student in low performing school, etc. Your GC/college advisor could write about your family background in the rec. letter.
