First Generation

I have a question. What is First Generation? I'm quite confused by everyone's interpretation.

You're the first one in the family to go to college. Meaning your parents and grandparents didn't.

I think it's also okay if your siblings go to college, too, because they are part of your generation...

Oh.. so I'm not..

I guess not if the parental units have a degree in something.

First generation can mean a lot of things. If you say that someone is a fisrt generation college student, it means that he/she is the first one to go to college in their family. On the other hand, when I heard first generation my first thought was about first-generation Americans/immigrants, a term which denotes people who emmigrated to the U.S.

Cool, nvr heard abt the latter definition. Not in my social context. embarrassed at my know-it-all attitude

does it help?
