First Generation??

I know that Yale considers first generation status in applicants, but I dont know if I classify as first gen. is this specifically for 4-yr bachelor degrees??

my mom got her associate's degree, and my dad went to college but never got a degree.

thanks for the help
(SCEASers-5 DAYS!!)

hmm smr15, that's exactly how my situation is. My mom has an associate's in accounting and my dad attended college for only one semester. I asked about it in my interview, and my interviewer, while ultimately unsure, said I would probably be viewed in favorable light, aka yes you are first generation, because of it.

Hopefully they consider it.

I did some google-ing and it seems that ppl classify first gens two different ways. Some say to be first gen, parents have a high school degree or less, and neither of them ever ATTENDED college.
the federal govt, though, says a first gen student is "an individual both of whose parents did not complete a baccalaureate degree"

of course, i still have no idea which definition colleges use.

I am in a similiar situation as well. Niether parent has a four-year degree, but my did went to get some associate degree certifications at a local tech school for his job when I was a young kid. That's not college, in my book.

On the CommonApp it asks where you parents went to college, so you have to write it down I assume, even if they didn't get a bachlers.

Yes, i know that colleges will see where my parents attended, but I just don't know what exactly classifies a student to be first generation...

Not that it makes that much of a difference, it's just at this point (as in 4 days before decisions are back) I'm trying to find and add up all the little part of my application that will convince me I have a shot.

so ONLY 4 years bachelors count as college? I'm also having a problem. I put Vocational/Technical for my dad - do I still count as first gen?

what about a college degree from another country?

yea, what if your parents have a college degree from another country?

yeah i wish i knew all of this... sorry i can't help

For the University of California, they count that as high school graduate.

i think the best thing is to call up yale, which is what i'm gonna do. so:

1) associates?
2) technical/vocational?
3) college degree from another country?
