First Hartt Thread

Hi Evasmom & D - Thank you for your kind words - it makes a mom proud! My D was home this past weekend for Easter and told us about your visit to Hartt. Your fortunate that you found this site prior to college admissions - it is so helpful. We didn't find it until D's auditions were done. Thankfully it all worked out just fine for her. She's loving her time at Hartt and feels she is getting excellent training and made the right choice. She wanted me to tell you that if you or Eva have any questions, feel free to ask and she will get back to you.

I read on another thread that your D was accepted to CMU's summer program - congratulations. Sounds like a great program - lots of work and lots of fun!

Again, thank you!

To anyone who is going to or considering Hartt
What are the major advantages of this program? What make it unique either in its program or processes? Any insight would be appreciated

I am a freshman at Hartt. If anyone has any questions about the program and the school please PM me and I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Hey....yeah I applied to the Hartt School of Music. I actually take lessons there from the community division. I am a senior in high school and am auditioning for it. It has a very good reputation and is one of the major fine arts colleges in new england. I live here in connecticut about 10-15 minutes away and don't see why people would bash it. Connecticut has extreme seasons, it isnt like the place is a dump. The buildings are very old so mabey the whole old stone/ gray cold skys gave you that idea or something.

Also keep in mind that there arent really any good ways to rate performing arts colleges too so comparing them can be difficult. The University of hartford is made up of a bunch of smaller colleges, The Hartford Arts School, The Hartt School(drama, dance, music,) The Barney School of Businuss, and a few others i think. The dorms for freshmen arent as nice as the ones for upper classmen, they have some really nice ones for them, and off campus housing options. Fine arts people get a specific dorm complex that is nicer than the other freshmen dorms.

The hartt school of music isnt Juillard, but it is still a lot better than many other colleges music programs. It is very expensive....since it is a private school so get financial aid and scholerships if you can. Also keep in mind if you arent from connecticut dont judge the university on the area around it like the north end of hartford....that is just a section connecticut is a nice state especially outside of the hartford area. The campus is safe even though it is near some bad areas of connecticut.

A quick list of fine arts schools worth looking into

Juilliard (good luck getting in! 8% acceptance rate only 800 people actually attend the school if you combine undergrad/grad school. )

Hartt School/ The Hartford Art School (both part of UHA)

Boston Conservatory

New England Conservatory

Actually the acceptance rate for Acting at Juilliard is about 2%!

Anyone know the stats on Hartt's acceptance rate? I usually ask for the number who apply (to MT), the number of offers they make, and the number of students who accept/matriculate. So when you say a school's rate is 2%, is that the # applicants/# in the program?

Usually when acceptance rates are given, they refer to what percentage were accepted of those who applied, and NOT to how many actually matriculate.

Example....if a school auditions 400 students and accepts 40 students to yield 20 slots in the class, the acceptance rate is stated as 10%, even though 5% will actually enter the freshman class. In fact, it is a misconception when some people will say, as in my example, "400 auditioned and they only take 20!" because they know that 20 are in the freshman class, but truly the school accepted 40 to get those 20. This is just an example and there is great variation. However, acceptance rates mean admit rate, not based on how many slots are available or how many matriculate.

Hartt Theatre Acceptance Rate

This year Hartt had a little over 400 students audition for the Musical Theatre and Actor Training programs. We accepted about 60 students to each program. Each year we look for a class of no more than 25 MT students and 15 AT students.

can anyone give any information on the university as a whole. Like admissions averages. some stuff i couldnt find online

Hi Nick da Man 08,

Here are some basic stats:

University of Hartford has about 5,000 undergraduate students
582 undergraduate students, 122 graduate at Hartt

86% of Hartt's accepted students receive a talent award

340 acre campus in West Hartford, CT

1 hour and 30 minutes from Boston
2 hours from NYC

12:1 full-time faculty/student ratio with an addition 75 part-time faculty

Please feel encouraged to contact me with any questions at 860.768.4465.

Nick,

If you are talking about "admissions averages" for University of Hartford, here is some of what you may be asking about:

66% overall acceptance rate to the University
69% come from out of state
mid SAT ranges: CR 480-580, M 490-580, CR/M combined 970-1170, mid ACT 21-25

Hartt Admissions (College Rep) gave you the acceptance rate for the BFA program. (120 admitted out of 400 who audition for MT and Acting)

Our Son studies tuba with Scott at Mason Gross at Rutgers.
He is terrific!

Musicmom,

That is great to hear!

As a musical theatre major, are you allowed to minor outside of the Hartt school (in something totally unrelated, like Communications)? Thanks!

I talked a very nice and informative lady from the theatre dept of Hartt. She said that many times MT majors take so many liberal arts as well as arts classes that with a few more classes many of the graduates leave with a minor in English. She was also excited about the new building that will be in use as of autumn 2008. It combines many of the performing arts areas that have been spread throughout the campus on previous years.

Does anyone know of MT working alumni from Hartt. I know they have a great program but not much info from the website on this topic.

It is so hard to keep up with where our recent theatre alumni are working, as most regional theatres run a show for about 4 weeks. Below you will find a list of people that I could list off of the top of my head. (I am sorry if I forgot anyone. We are proud of all of you)

I know the Hartt school has the BEST voice teachers, but how good are the theatre teachers?

I've heard someone say going to Hartt is like paying money to perform because that is all you ever do and you dont learn anything.

I really would like to attend Hartt

I'd say by the list above of working alumni that the students must be learning a bit more than vocal technics. These are just the recent graduates. I appreciate getting an answer from a Hartt college rep on this subject instead of rumors from other posters. To me it is always important to know how successful former students are. It would be nice to here from a current student on their opinion of the theatre teachers.
