Hartt MT Mom Here to Answer Questions

As acceptances come through and decisions need to be made feel free to ask me questions. D is a sophomore MT

How many MT students in each class. How big is the MT class of 2016 for example?

We are definitely on hold at our house…has anyone who applied RD (not early) heard from Hartt yet? I know that kids who applied early heard via regular mail, but I don’t know what to expect other than that in the past, they’ve notified in late March. Very anxious to hear! Thanks for the info offer, sadiedkh!

Times3-we applied RD and have not heard yet either. At first I thought with the death of Kevin Gray things might run behind but like you when I researched past posts it looks like they notify pretty late.

My S applied RD as well. Received acceptance into school but nothing from department…he has a few friends he made along the way through audition process that got MT acceptance letters on Monday.

Wow, that does sound like things might be starting to happen there. I was fully resolved NOT to obsess about this one till the end of the month! I wonder if MT and Acting notify at the same time? Like your son, actsandsings, mine got the academic acceptance awhile ago but hasn’t heard anything else since. We didn’t really know what to expect of Hartt–had driven through but not done a real visit prior to the audition, but we very much liked the people and facility and overall tone of the program.

Sadiedkh, thanks for offering to answer questions! How many academic classes do the kids take per semester and do you know if any kids take honors classes? Is your D in regular or specialty housing? Thank you!!

Something seems to be happening at Hartt. We gave our home number as the contact number. Ashley at Hartt left a message asking my son to call her. The challenge is that cell phones aren’t allowed on in class, so he’s tried to reach her twice yesterday (lunch and after class) and got her voice mail both times. He’s trying again today, but is in rehearsal for the high school play that opens tomorrow. We’re hoping it is an acceptance, but you never know with all these programs. If it is indeed an offer, what’s meant to be a nice personal gesture is turning into a frustrating experience.
Hartt was a late addition to our application list, encouraged by a trusted friend who teaches at the regional performing arts high school in Hartford. Now that we’re getting close, I’ve researched the program more and I have to say I’m really, really impressed. My son has an acting acceptance to Ithaca and during the few weeks that he’s had that, he’s gotten his head oriented toward Ithace, but I’m wondering if Hartt isn’t a better program. The Hartt faculty looks particularly impressive and the program just looks a little more rigorous. I’d be interested in anyone’s thoughts on Hartt vs Ithaca regarding the quality and reputation of the training.

One of my students got a call two days ago, so its probably an acceptance–but you never know. I was told by the student that they are only calling a few “definites”.

My son was accepted EA (BFA acting…) and in his acceptance letter he was told more information would be coming in January (we finally got something in mid-February) and also that he would be receiving an artistic scholarship and the info would be sent in March (still nothing). I called the school and was told this info would not be sent until April…so they are behind!

Sadie - can non-MT majors (such as acting majors!) audition for the musicals? Thanks!

My D got her acceptance letter in the last week of March and it came in a very thin envelope, so don’t be alarmed if something slim comes in the mail from U. Hartford!

Typical MT class is 20-25, AT 15-18. D’s 2015 class was unusually large 37-38. The school has handled this by hiring additional teachers and creating extra classes. We will see what happens with junior and senior casting, but the larger class size has not been an issue thus far. I believe the 2016 class was held to 24 or 25

Photomom, MT’s can audition for non-musicals. AT’s are not permitted to audition for musicals

Kadiblue, Hartt’s MT and AT programs are for all intents and purposes conservatory programs. The kids need to take a few core classes during their four years but can also place out based on HS grades, AP, IB. There is also something called “all university” classes or credits that they have to take, but many of these will also relate back to their BFA such as history of theatre. D is not doing honors, but I understand that’s few MT’s in her class are.

Re Hartt’s acceptance process – D received academic acceptance to UH in late January. Fast forward to mid-March, as others were receiving their acceptances and rejections D’s letter was literally “lost in the mail”. I called the office and was told to wait letters had been mailed. Then D signed into her account and saw she was listed as a confirmed student and MT major. I called a second time got the same response. During the third call someone looked up D’s file and read me her acceptance over the phone!! I was also told she was receiving a talent scholarship and the amount. The actual letter – and that’s what it is a regular, small envelope – didn’t arrive for at least another week so we were behind all the other acceptances by at least two weeks. I didn’t believe that she was “in” until I had that letter in hand!

Broadway95, Kevin Gray’s passing took its toll on everyone at Hartt, but I don’t think it will have any impact on the administrative functions of the school. In fact, seeing how the faculty and students handled this devastating situation, reinforced D is in the right place.

Kadieblue, re housing. As a freshman, D lived in Hawk Hall. It was beautiful and bright and I would encourage you to have your child apply to be part of that community. The regular freshman dorms are bleak at best. In sophomore year a majority of MT’s and AT’s move off campus, mostly to shared houses, some to apartments. Those who do stay on campus move to apartment style living in one of three complexes, some with kitchens, some without.

Hartt will arrange for a shadow day. D spent the night in a friends dorm and the next day was paired with a Sophomore or Junior MT. She observed a full day of classes and had lunch with the kids at the Backstage Cafe.

Thanks for all the information!
