I am an international applicant from India.
I know how to speak, read, write in Hindi, English and Maithili from childhood.
Hindi and Maithili is spoken at home.
Also I could Read and write in French.
So which would be my first language?

You may want to ask your parents what language they spoke to you first, and what language your first words were in.

They speak both hindi and maithili.
And I too speak both hindi and maithili with them

I also speak two languages at home and I stated in my Common App that both are my first languages. I ticked all five boxes for both languages.

then i should also tick all fives boxes for both languages.
And leave English for speak read write.

My Ds were born in the US. Although we speak another language at home, they grew up with English in school. They would mark English as their first language as it is the one they used throughout their grade school and the one that they can read/write/listen/speak. So I don’t think the definition would be the language we first speak to them as they cannot really read/write in the other language but the language who was first educated with.

@billcsho then I would have three languages as first language.
Because I studied in English medium from Kindergarten
And I could speak write read listen in all three languages .

If you feel comfortable to read/write/speak/listen in any of them without any problem, then they are not your second language.

okay, thanks for the help
