Proud papa, you echo a lot of the ideas and feelings of the parents here. I am still writing a letter (one to each twin!) every day and sometimes will just jot down a couple sentences on a postcard and zip it off. But, my eldest is a senior in college this year and I am still writing to him 3-5 times a week - and he has complete access to email and telephone. Still, there's nothing like a letter from home, with a stick of gum, $1 (or $5 or even $10 or $20!)... my son called me once last winter when he had not received a letter in six days (we had the flu at home and didn't write).

My DD, a rising hs senior, writes to her bros every other day, with a long letter every 5 days or so. There is nothing like a short card or note, just to say, I love you and you will always have a haven at home. I think it enables the kids to go out and attack the world!
