Getting the PIN shouldn’t take long. Start the FAFSA as soon as possible after today (it’s supposed to go live tomorrow) and submit as soon as possible. Check colleges for deadlines. For my daughter, the first deadline is Jan. 15. Ugh.

Early bird gets the worm… You can do FAFSA with estimates of your income. We always use the last paycheck of the year to submit. You will have the opportunity to make corrections when you actually get your W2 forms and file. But do get the FAFSA in soon as possible. get your PIN ASAP.

how long is the fafsa application?

I just went to the website - it says the 2011 - 12 form is there, but I don’t see it - only the 2010-11.

We just applied for a pin today. Can we start the form before receiving approval on the pin, or do we have to wait? I think some of my DD’s schools are Jan 15th too.

We are first timers too, but some of her schools required the CSS Profile, so at least we have a bit of practice gathering documentation.

It is not available until January 1st. I don’t know why it has been saying it is available the last few days, when in reality it has not been.

You can start it without your PIN. As far as I can recall from last year you can set up a temporary password to go back to your in process FAFSA (make sure you save before you leave it). You just need the PINs (2 - one for student, one for a parent) when you want to actually submit it.

Make sure that you are filing the FAFSA for school year 2011-2012 and not 2010-2011

I went to the site and hit the “Start Here” button. i think it is the right one. The one strange thing was when I automatically imported my finances from the IRS. It is the 2009 data.

That’s because it is the 2010-2011 FAFSA which did use 2009 tax data. That is not the correct FAFSA for the 2011-2012 school year. That will not be available until January 1st.

Completing the wrong FAFSA will not get you financial aid and will not count as having met any deadlines your school has set.

You may be right but the web site says

“•The new 2011-2012 FAFSA is here! To begin your application, click Start Here above.”

I am right. Read the the FAFSA you have started - it is the 2010-2011 FAFSA. You are wasting your time completing that, unless you are starting school Spring 2011.

Yeah, that’s what it says, but all that you’ll get to do is get a PIN for 2011-2012.

You are right. I just went on line withthe FAFSA live help and they confirmed this. BTW - They were very helpful and responded quickly

I’ve been trying to get the 2011-2012 form for 30 minutes, its not there yet. I was advised to go on at 12:01 am…looks like there is a glitch on the site

You and me both. I toasted the new year and went to the computer. I can’t get in either for 2011. Boy, what a different New Year’s Eve from my youth.

krmom8 and terry1017

i suspect that you would have to wait until 2am eastern time (or 1am central, or 12am mountain, or 11pm pacific) to file next year’s fafsa.

ok. i stand corrected…the fafsa is up now for 2011-2012!

get there and start typing, early birds (my application was finished a few minutes ago…my only income being social security disability and SSI)!!

baker, it may not matter, but the untaxed portions of SSD are not reportable for FAFSA…not sure about SSI. Congrats on getting your filing done…and here I thought I was an early bird!

SSI does not count towards the EFC calculations on the fafsa either…at least that was my understanding…

let me take a look at the paper fafsa and see if SSI counts or not…

i just checked the paper FAFSA instructions…

SSI and Social Security benefits (including Social Security Disability benefits that are not over a certain yearly amount)
should not be put down anywhere on the FAFSA. it is not counted towards the EFC.

just thought you guys and gals that collect SSI and social security benefits who are filling out the FAFSA for the first time should know.
