First try on the SAT - 2090

I didn't study in the least, and I definitely didn't get enough sleep when I took the SAT in December. I ended up with a 2090, with 720 Reading, 660 Math, and 710 Writing. I'm retaking the SAT again in March, and I was wondering how much higher could I possibly score.

I've been studying recently by going over vocabulary and taking a practice test every week, and my scores have been improving in the practice tests, but I'm a bit dyslexic. What do you think my chances are of scoring at least a 2200?

All of the colleges that I'm thinking of applying to are really selective, and I don't want my low SAT score to ruin my chances. Is there anything else I can do, besides studying vocabulary lists and taking practice tests? Should I sign up for a course?

Seeing as your lowest score was math, I would focus more on that than on the reading/writing portions.

I personally don’t think a course is necessary, though go for it if you really think it’ll help. I don’t really know how dyslexia impacts SATs, so for that you might want to get a tutor, if you think that’s a big part of why you’re not doing as well as you’d like. If you don’t want to spend money on a class or a tutor I think that if you commit time to it you can improve your math score just by reading a review book (I recommend PR), and the others mainly by doing practice (personally I don’t think studying vocab is as important as people say- it’s actually a pretty small part of the test and I didn’t think it was worth it. Granted I’m pretty good with words so I guess well, but I didn’t study vocab at all and still got a 790 just through practice). So basically, though a class or a tutor could be beneficial, I’d personally recommend studying on your own and just practicing to bring your score up (your score is very good already, but if you want to score higher I think that someone getting 2000+ should be able to get up to 2200+ fairly easily with some work). Good luck!! :)

A class would be a waste. I know nothing about dyslexia, but before you hire a tutor, make sure that they understand LD. Otherwise, a tutor would be a waste as well.

Not a fan of vocab cards. Better to read the NYT, Wall Street Journal and Economist.

The good news is that the math is the easiest to increase. Just focus on the xiggi method, top of the SAT sub-thread.

2090 is a great start! I actually got a 2090 on a December SAT examination back in 2006. Then in October of my senior year I scored 2400! So the sky’s the limit. Focus & study hard!

A 2200 is well within reach, though I don’t know why you would take it without doing practice tests before hand. A 2090 is good enough to get into a lot of nice places.

Thank you. The first time, I was exhausted by school and was silly enough not to take it seriously, which I do know. I probably won’t get a course then, or a tutor. I just wasn’t sure, because some people swear by it. I’ll be sure to practice way more this time around, and buy the review book!

does anyone here know where i can find the explanations for questions in the FIRST edition blue book??? i made a thread about this but no one replied :(
