(Hopefully) Attending the National Student Leadership Conference in Law & Advocacy or Intelligence & National Security

Attending the U.S. Naval Academy Swim Camp

My overall goal is to enter the U.S. Navy as an Officer after graduating college, serve for a few years as a Naval Officer, then transition to the U.S. Navy Reserve and attend a top law school.

Thank you for your time.

Here is the Naval Academy’s class profile:

And Naval ROTC information, including scholarships:

But you probably want to do a lot better in school if you want to try for the Naval Academy or one of the full scholarships from NROTC.

Don’t go to the National Student Leadership Conference unless you’re really rich/bored. It’s not prestigious and they just want your money. I’ve heard its a good experience if you’re willing to pay, but it’s not going to benefit your application at all.

Happyniece1 attended a NSL Conference and reported that while it wasn’t an utter waste of her time, she had had similar experiences elsewhere and could have saved her money. She did say that for many students attending, it was their first experience of that type, and she felt that those students benefited much more than she did.

That said, your summer plans look to add up to a fair chunk of money. How do your parents feel about shelling out for that? Will they still have plenty of cash left over to pay for your college education? What do they say about you getting some kind of paying summer job? Since you are a swimmer, are there any swimming instructor or lifeguard opportunities available to you?

You have a decent academic profile, and a clear goal. Those are good things. What you do not indicate anywhere in your post is whether or not you and your parents have talked about how you will be paying for your education. Sit down with them and find out how much money is available. What happens if you don’t get into the Naval Academy, and you also don’t qualify for NROTC anywhere? You need to have a financial plan in order if you need to go to Plan B, C, or D.

Wishing you all the best!

If you were my kid, I would advise you strongly to cut down on the extra curricular fluff and focus more on your grades. You may or may not not change your mind about your future career plans, but in any case, stronger grades will give you more and better options. Sounds like you have too many distractions right now.

I agree with M’s Mom here. You have an insane amount of ECs but it has definitely hurt your GPA.
