First USAMO Winner to be rejected

My friend told me to post this to scare people. But I think Yale doesn't really care about math that much.

USAMO winner, IMO team alternate, Three times MOsP, First place National Mu convention...

These things were probably ignored during the process.
Anyway, I'm probably the only USAMO winner to apply and be rejected by Yale.

Ouch, that sucks. But I doubt that it means Yale doesn't care about math. I think it's just evidence that it's almost freaking impossible to get in :)

Me & at least one other Davidson Fellow were deferred.

Seriously? It's hard to believe that Yale could fail to recognize such talent.

If you don't mind my asking, what's your name?

apply MIT

they'll love it!

Maybe they realized that there was a better fit somewhere else for you and that you'd never come.

that's also true

I'm sure Yale does care about math, but not to the exclusion of other factors. In the results thread, you state that your scores were very lopsided. That may have hurt you. But more importantly, you say that your essays were “full of grammatical errors.” An error-filled application can overshadow even the finest credentials. It sends the message that you aren't seriously interested. If you're not interested, why should Yale be?

Congrats on your impressive math accomplishments. I'm sure you'll have great results in the spring. Please remember to proofread your RD applications.

man really? :| i don't think yale care as much about math as the other HYPSM (just a guess)... definiately apply MIT though... just fix up your essays a bit and you're pretty much in i bet

that just makes me want to cry.

just some trivia... the last time we had a yale putnam fellow was back in 1989... guess recruiting mathletes isn't the main priority there

You'll get into Harvard/Stanford/MIT, so no worries.

what the...............

You have nothing to worry about... I'm sure you'll be getting likely letters from some schools.

Harvard admissions would love you. Yale admissions tends to lean towards accepting students who are not only bright but also "well-rounded".

Also, you're an international applicant.

Another factor: The OP didn't disclose his GPA in the results thread. If it is low, that could have torpedoed his application.
