Can current students chime in on the different advising options (Host Advising, CAP, Faculty Seminar, etc.) with some personal experience and/or recommendations? There are many options and it’s difficult to get a sense for them just by reading the paragraph descriptions. If you have a recommendation for one over another, please advise. Thanks!
Is it time for them to make these decisions? My daughter hasn’t mentioned anything to me about this….
@Momtothreegirls Yes, but she has until June 15th to decide.
Ack. Time to sit down and discuss with my daughter. She never mentioned. I guess a taste of how little I will know about her life in college….
My now sophomore son opted for the faculty class. He took a classics class with a prof who was tough but may well end up being one of his best professors at tufts. She was an amazing advisor for his first two years (he just now switched over to his major advisor) and he’s asked her if he can still occasionally meet with her for advice, which she graciously agreed to. He thought it was great to have her as a prof as well as an advisor bc it allowed her to really get to know him. The class was small, around 10-12 ppl, I think. It made for a great transition to college. And this particular prof was seriously into writing feedback, so S felt that his writing, which was decent to begin with (he’s an English lit major), improved in his very first semester.
Sounds like the whole thing is driven by whether you find a particular class that you fall in love with. Wondering if my D should pick a class that is close to her major (or what she thinks it will be), or something completely different!
I went for host advising because to me it appeared you had to pick an advising class within a “subject” you chose, like humanities, arts, etc. I had some advising classes that sounded interesting to me, but one was an arts class, one was humanities and one was something else, so I couldn’t have them all on my short list.
