First-Year Classes

I'm wondering how large typical first-year classes are. Does it depend on the subject? I'm hoping everything isn't a large lecture. Also, could someone tell me the classes that are required for freshmen? Thank you in advance!

I can only provide information about the classes my son took and is taking this year. He is an engineering major. His largest class is Freshman Chemistry with around 200 students. His physics class is around 100. All of his other classes have been around 30 - Math, Intro to Engineering, Music Literature and Music Theory. Some a little bigger, some a little smaller. He is also taking a jazz combo class with 6 students.

In comparison to his friends attending various UC campuses, his classes are much smaller than theirs for the same classes.

There isn’t really a list of required classes for freshmen. In Arts & Sciences, you are required to take a writing seminar. Otherwise you just pick out some electives for your core and some of your initial major requirements.

pilgrim6, you should really review the degree requirements and recommendations for your subject area (in the undergrad catalog, which you can find on the website). You’ll get the best info there of the required and almost-required courses for your freshman year and subsequent years. Planning ahead generally helps!

Does the school send out a hard-copy of the undergrad catalog before students register? Or is it all only online?

It’s online. You can pick one up at the Admissions Office.

Class size really varies. Last semester, my son had classes of 15, 20, 25, and 100. This semester he has 20, 35, 50, 100, and 300 (with one day being a discussion group of 15.) Most of his courses have been sophomore level though.

This is what the school of engineering sent to incoming freshman to schedule their fall classes last summer. HTH! http://engineering.vanderbilt.edu/docs/student-services/Registration-Booklet-Fall-2013.pdf

Eta…my son had 40+ AP credits, so he did not follow the guide. He spoke with the advisor to choose his courses. He pretty much started in the sophomore year recommended sequence for his major as listed in the above catalog.

My D had a lot of very small classes. I think her largest classes were AXLE classes, like History of Rock. Her special topics classes were probably the smallest.
