My son is working on his residence hall choices and one of the options is a "First Year Experience" residential floor. What is your input on this option? Pros? Cons?

I think that “first year experience” would mainly be a hall where they try to get kids involved and host a bunch of events in an attempt to give the students a good, exciting first year. But in my opinion, as long as the residence halls are for freshmen, he should chose something interesting or appropriate for his situation. For example, my hall cluster has a “theme” of Intellectual Competence (for people who are hoping for a more toned-down place where it’s possible to study. We still have a lot of fun, but the studying people are respected), there’s a few “arts” halls or “interpersonal Relationships” or stuff like that. Chose something that he feels comfortable with, because I have a feeling that the first year experience residents will just be kids who don’t really care.

Some colleges offer the first year experience and it has more social time with the same group together. The also are put into a few classes together. They have more opportunity of seeing each other so bonding is easier. They also have group seminars that help with organization. Check and see what the school says about it.

My daughter was going to do it, but wanted to do honors instead and be in the scholars house with those peers. It’s on a quiet floor which is what she would prefer.
