How often do students get the housing that they prefer at Amherst?

I would suggest going to college prow.ler and reading up on the housing section. That’s probably the best sample size you can get.

I would guess that most incoming freshman request Charles Pratt, that is the Ritz Carlton of freshman dorms. Obviously most wont get it, but they will try to honor requests for substance free dorms for instance. The questionaire also asks about sleeping habits, bedtimes, party habits etc., and they try to do their best at matching you with somebody compatable.

If an incoming student requests substance-free or single-gender housing, that request will be accommodated. Most students I know are relatively satisfied with their housing assignment–minor and inevitable roommate conflicts notwithstanding–so long as they do not expect to be assigned a single.

Furthermore, if a student provides strong reason for a particular housing situation (medical reasons for a two-room double, for example), Residential Life will be as accommodating as possible.

Unfortunately, housing is very tight at Amherst for the 2012-2013 year, so there won’t be a lot of room for much flexibility in assignments.

any idea when/how we register for housing?

If you look on the website for incoming students they say they include links to the housing questionnaire along with a lot of other info in an email toward the end of may.
I called the office of admissions today and they said they sent out the first wave of them yesterday and that the next wave of emails will be sent out next week sometime. For students who were admitted off the wait-list such as theviolethour and myself, it takes a little longer for the system to “process” us as students. So in answer to your question, the link will be available sometime next week :)

:) can’t wait!
