When do we get to apply/select a dorm?

Last year the housing questionaire was available on-line on June 9th, but you won’t find out about your housing assignment and roommate until the middle of August. You don’t get to request any particular dorm, they just assign you one based on the answers you give.

How hard is it to get a single as a junior transfer student? And which dorms are the best for upperclassmen?

OCCTransfer–I don’t know about transfer students and housing. We did Room Draw in April, though. In terms of housing for upperclassmen, it really depends. Rising juniors typically scrounge around for the nicest singles they can get, usually in Morrow/Moore or possibly King and Wieland. The socials, suite-based residential halls, are mainly filled with juniors. The nice ones are Taplin, Jenkins, and Coolidge, and they get taken very high on the list. Rising seniors take control of Hamilton and The Triangle, composed of Seelye, Mayo-Smith, and Hitchcock. The singles in these rooms are fancy to disgusting proportions and some even have fireplaces.

Wow, can’t wait to be a senior. So, I’m guessing transfer students get whatever is left from the room draw?

OCCTransfer, not everyone participates in room draw. Some students wait to see what’s available later. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll end up in a less desirable spot. And I’m sure the housing office considers incoming transfers and sets aside appropriate housing.

Anyone know what to put in the housing questionnaire to get a nice dorm? I got an email that said transfer students are expected to have roommates. I wrote back saying I wouldn’t be comfortable with sharing a room at this point in my life being that I’ve lived on my own for so long. She told me to put that in my questionnaire, so I can get a single.

ok, wow. The housing preference form for transfer students alllows me to pick my top 4 dorms. Should I put down King, Moore, Wieland, and Morrow like gobadgers suggested?

I am junior transfer that has never lived in a dorm, so don’t laugh at my question. Do any of the upperclassman dorms have a kitchen where I can cook? I am spending a lot of time this summer learning how to make delicious Bosnian food, and would love to be able to cook at Amherst.

I know there’s one dorm that has a full kitchen, but I can’t remember the name. Just put down that you want a dorm with a kitchen so you can cook on your housing form.

Just remembered. Cohan has a full kitchen, but the rooms are tiny. At least that’s what several people have told me.

Garman and Chapman both have kitchens. Newport does too, but it’s a theme house. There are probably a couple others I’m forgetting.
