First-Year Seminars

What are some of the best first-year seminars? I have a wide variety of interests and I’m not sure what I want to major in, so I’m finding it hard to narrow down my choices.

If there’s already a thread on this, then a link would be helpful, because I searched for it but wasn’t able to find anything.

Thanks in advance!

There really is no “best” first-year seminar. Opinions vary widely–seriously. It really just depends on who teaches it, the students in your class, and most importantly the subject matter. What may be interesting to me, may not be your cup of tea. Shop a few and see what works for you. Start with your immediate interests and then branch out to see what else appeals to you. At the end of the day, you may find a non-FYS that works better for you. The joys of having thousands of courses to choose from!

Why don’t you list some of the ones that look interesting to you? Then people can comment on them.

Also, once you get your email and log in information, you should be able to look at the Critical Review online. FYS are often reviewed there.

Writers on Writing is pretty epic. Not gonna lie. Hands down best class this year and probably one of the best I will ever have at Brown. I’m SOOOOOOOOOOO happy I took it. (and I’m a math/science guy)

^ I think that class is one of a kind, and the students who take it are very lucky!

Anyway, re. other FYSes that I know of: Freedom was generally hated by the few people I knew in that class because the professor was considered very, very dry. Diamonds had a grrrreat professor; it’s offered by the geo department, so no surprises there :p. I’ve heard good things about Transportation (taught by Kurt Teichert, who’s a swell guy) – you learn a lot of extremely relevant stuff, and Kurt’s papers can even end up being fun to write because the prompts are pretty open-ended to encourage you to delve into subtopics that fascinate you.

^ I agree. I was VERYVERYVERY lucky, but the luck does not end there. Not only is it an FYS, There’s an upperclassmen class of it too!!! (with the same exact name). I would suggest all prefrosh to put it as first choice (as I cannot see who wouldn’t enjoy this class) and shop it even though the 1st day they try and intimidate you out of it (it’s really not very difficult…)
