First Year Seminars

Are freshmen usually able to get into the Seminar of their choice? I get the impression these are supposed to be small classes, but I could be wrong... so, what if one particular class is wanted by many students?

They're small classes. The maximum number of students in each one is, I believe, 15. As for which one is wanted, there's generally not a huge rush for any one class, because everyone has their own particular interests (and different seminars are offered every year, with some repeats, so one seminar doesn't really get a reputation for being a really good class). In general, though, it's a good idea to have two or three that you're interested in, just in case they fill up. It depends a lot on registration time. I was pretty sure that I wanted to take one in the Spring semester, and, because I had a good registration time, I had no problem getting into the class. The two that I was sort of interested in first semester, though, were full by the time I got to register.

echo ginnyvere. Although, some fill up quicker than others.

So is there any trick to signing up before they fill-up?

Pray for a good registration time. If you get a really crappy registration time first semester, you'll have a good time the next semester. So I think your best bet is to decide on one FYS each semester, and then decide which one you'll take based on which semester you've got a good time. Of course if you're in the middle both times, that wont help much (although second semester registration will go in waves, so everyone will get to register for eight hours before anyone can register for more, and so you'll have a good chance if you register during the first wave for spring semester).

Also, it can't hurt to get on the waiting list if the FYS that you really want is full. It's unlikely that you'll get in (so make sure that you've got a spot in another class and only drop it if you get in the class you want) because not many people drop their seminar, but there's always the chance. Get on the waiting list, go to the class and if anyone is a no show for two (?) days, and you're in.

I'm not aware of any way of signing up before your registration time. Just pick two or three you're really interested in and sign up for the one that is available.
