First Year Summer Experience

Our daughter has been accepted for Fall 2014. She was thinking about enrolling in the week long "Live the Maroon Life" First Year Summer Experience.
She has never been away from home by herself and we thought this would be a good sample introduction of what it is going to be like.
Also wondering if there is a shuttle to and from Raleigh airport. I am thinking of flying down with her (since she has never flown) and flying back myself the next day. We are hoping that there would be a shuttle for the students to return to the airport together at the end of the week. This way she could travel with the other students she has met that week.
I know they stay in the residence halls for the week but not sure about meals.... Any feedback on the program? Any input would be helpful and much appreciated.

My daughter did a summer experience before her freshman year. She absolutely loved it. The group got very close and she enjoyed having friends when she arrived on campus in the fall. I highly recommend it.

Yes, there is a shuttle to and from the airport. They will take your flight information and someone will be there to meet her. It was my daughter’s first time flying alone and it went very smoothly for her.

Meals are all taken care of. Elon does a really nice job with it.

Congratulations to your daughter – she’s got a great year ahead of her!

Thanks so much for your help. I think I may have her contact some of the other students that have been accepted to see if others are interested in attending. Hoping she can travel with someone who is more experienced that she is with that.
I am so glad for this forum. You all have been so helpful and supportive. One more reason why we know she will be attending the right school. She is coming from a small high school (165 in her graduating class). She has been with many of them from elementary through high school. We have become very close with the families. She is looking forward to expanding her circle of friends at Elon but wants the a close supportive group too.

My daughter did one of the first year experience programs (one night on campus and the others off site camping) and I would say that this should be a required program for all, it was that great. She met a lot of new people and had several connections on day one of fall semester. She knew no one going into the program and that was an ok thing. The confidence she built through that experience was amazing!

My S attended “Live the Maroon Life” a couple of years ago and it was great. The best thing about it is how close the kids become. He still hangs out with some of those kids. Just my opinion, but I wouldn’t contact the other kids she knows that are going to Elon to get them to attend with her. I think it would be better to meet new people.

Does your d have a drivers license or passport, she’ll need to show id.
If not, best to think about getting her a gov’t issued pictured ID sooner than later.
Found having a passport was useful for internships that required proof of citizenship and invites to join friends on trips out of the country.
Also she could register for PreTSA Check if available at your home airport.

Why not send her on a flight to visit family so she can get used to flying solo before her trip to Elon?
Seeking a flying companion for a 17 year old seems unnecessary.
