Fish Breeding as an EC?

I know it sounds weird, but for two years, I selectively bred tropical fish and sold them to pet stores. It did take a pretty serious commitment, as I was caring for about 400 fish in my house with no help. I really enjoyed doing it, but I feel if I put it on my commonapp, the adcoms wouldn't take me seriously and it may actually hurt me, but it is completely legit. Should I leave this out or put it? Thanks.

I would definitely put it! It seems really legit to me… I mean, you ran a business, you had to know about the science behind breeding, you liked it… Sounds awesome, and very unique. As long as you describe it well, I think it has the potential to come off as impressive.

Now that is different. I agree with quomodo - an EC and business.

LOL. This made me laugh, because it conjured up funny images, but it’s really impressive.

Definitely put it down. It shows dedication, creativity, and business skills. Make sure you write a good description of what your fish breeding entailed. I don’t know whether the common app gives you enough space in the EC section, but you can describe it in additional information.

If I were you, I would even consider writing an essay about your fish breeding business.

Lol thanks everyone, I’m putting it for sure now. If I could make an essay about it, it would really stand out, but there’s not much to it really haha.

^That’s what you think, but the rest of us don’t run a tropical fish breeding business.

I’m sure breeding selectively, caring for 400 fish, and selling them to pet stores involves quite a lot.

That sounds like an amazing, outstanding EC. It shows commitment, responsibility, and entrepreneurship. Definitely write an essay about it!

Your message made me think of that Beverly Cleary children’s book where Henry raises guppies. Wondered if it rang the same bells with anyone else. Perhaps you could explain to the admissions folks in an essay why it was actually nothing like that. . .(Things didn’t work out well for old Henry, though)

It sounds like a fascinating EC.

That’s most likely one of the best EC’s I’ve seen yet on this website.
