I was thinking of any EC's that I could do that were extra special and totally different from the other things people were doing (the very common volunteering, etc.) and I thought that founding and owning either a private company or a non-profit organization would look really good. Any suggestions for what I should do? I'm completely clueless as to what I should even start to do when it comes to starting a business, organization, etc. Also, what kind/type of thing should my "business/org" be? Maybe something related to science/biomed etc. would be good, since I'm thinking of med school...
Thanks for your help!!!

well i dont think owning your own business is quite a NEW type of EC, cuz i myself is already doing that... (not that i actually OWN it but my school club seniors do and after they graduate we will take charge of that) .. but if you really have a passion about it and really WANT to do it, just follow it :D but if you're doing this in order to just "SHOW OFF" to the admission officers, you'd rather concentrate on other things more.

I agree with Diana - if you're only doing this to look good, then don't do it. Starting and running your own business takes a lot of time and effort. It is a big commitment. So unless you find something that you are passionate about and want to start a business involving it, don't do it. There are plenty of other opportunities out there, esp. if you are interesting in science, so go find something that is more suited to your interests, and the colleges will appreciate that much more!

ummmmm like WHAT OTHER THINGS, GUYS?? appreciate it if you could go a teeny bit more indepth..

ps. plz don't refer me to other threads in cc

Move to England. Win the Booker Prize.

pshhh yea right.. like im gonna go to "oggsford"

Science fair/independent research, tutoring, working with seniors, EMT...the list goes on.

EMT??? You think i should train to be one of those?? And how would i work with seniors?

Since you say you're interested in science/biomed, here are a few suggestions, but keep in mind that we're really not working off much info here.

Find a senior center in your area and start volunteering - they're always looking for help.

If you have a hospital in your area, see if you can volunteer with them.

If you have science/medical labs in the area, see if you can intern/work with them.

Tutor under-privledged kids in the sciences

If you're interested in animal medicine, see if you can work at a shelter or a vet's office or a barn or something like that.

If you're really motivated, maybe combine your interests in medicine and entrepreneurship and raise money to help AIDS in Africa or some other medical problem in a third-world country. There are plenty of organizations out there you can work with

If you're interested in the environment, go find an environmental protection agency or work to clean up your neighborhood/town or something

Do any of these look promising to you? Use these as a springboard for coming up with your own ideas. Take a look around your own neighborhood/town, read the newspaper, listen to people, and then take action. If something needs to get done in your community, work towards achieving that goal.
