FIT for Fine Arts

I just went to national portfolio day in Philadelphia. I recieved a lot of feedback from my work and the two schools that are my top choices Pratt and Parsons said I had a good portfolio and that I just needed a few more pieces. However, when I went to FIT they said it looked great and I would definitely get accepted if I applied.

My question is how good of a school is FIT for the fine arts? I noticed its significantly cheaper than the other two schools mentioned. Does it have a good reputation or do you think I should look elsewhere?

Thanks in advance,

Have you looked in to Purchase as a less expensive alternative? It's also a NY state school and has a wonderful fine arts dept.

FIT's fine arts program is not the cream, which is probably why they're quicker to approve your portfolio than Pratt or Parsons.

I took a fine arts precollege course there a while ago. FIT is foremost a fashion business school, fine arts coming in second priority. The facilities are nice enough and the teachers aren't bad, but there's nothing spectacular about the school. There's a few pieces from students on the FIT site for prospective students to view.

Also, FIT's got this weird degree program where a lot of the majors require you to get an Associates before moving on to the upper grades. You should look into that before making any decisions.

Thanks for the responses. Pratt and Parsons are definitly my first choices, but if I don't get the right financial package I think FIT might be my fall back option. I'll have to reasearch their program a bit more. I'm very much looking to go to NYC for art school are there any other reasonably priced choices that haev good art programs?

Thanks,

There's Cooper Union, which costs nothing if you can get into it. And also the School of Visual Arts has a fine arts program, and its tuition from what I can tell is cheaper than Pratt or Parsons. But that's without factoring in scholarships or financial aid from any of them.

I agree with aurorative, FIT is hugely and majorly a fashion school.
Cooper Union is pretty hardcore.
Look into SVA (School of Visual Arts) like above mentioned. Tuition wise, they are about $6 or $7K cheaper than Pratt and I think Parsons is even more expensive than Pratt...

I'll definitly check into SVA more. Do any of these schools offer many scholarships? I'm really hoping to cut the cost down to aprox. $30000 a year if possible. I guess I'll just apply to all and see what happens. Thanks for all the help.

Tom

SVA only offer half tuition scholarships. Cooper is def the best but it's extremely difficult to get into. I think Pratt def has a better fine arts ( painting at least) dpt than parsons( stronger in illustration tho). I think you should def go to a strong with good fine arts program. FIT is not a good fit at all.
