Fit Or Parsons

My daughter is only a hs freshman but is pretty clear and passionate about her interest in studying fashion design in college.
What kind of academic hs record and test scores are these schools looking for?

Thank you.

FIT, as with many art schools, are looking for relativly high GPAs. FIT looks for a minimum 3.0, though if your portfolio is outstanding they may accept lower (but not much lower). If you are applying to a business major than grades are the most important factor.
It never hurts to have a high GPA (FIT doesn't really look at SAT scores, though if they are high enough you don't have to take placement tests). The school is competative to get into, and grades can be that one thing that gives you an edge. I know people who are presently waitlisted because, though their portfolio was strong, their GPA could have been stronger.
If your daughter is interested in an art major, she should take some art classes to begin to build up a portfolio (and if she is interested in design I would recommed practicing sewing). Also, if you live nearby, FIT offers summer classes to high school students (SummerLive) and weekend classes durin the winter (SaturdayLive)...real FIT teachers teach these classes and they will usually help you build your portfolio (I believe they also offer business classes as well)

to mom958: lishy gave you very good info about preparing your daughter for a fashion design major, especially for FIT. I taught there for eight years, and I can tell you that the most successful students were those that knew why they were there, were willing to work hard (i.e., go the extra mile, do all assignments on time for every class, etc.), and were well-prepared. Any high school courses your D can take related to fashion design, and also to foundation skills, such as drawing, illustration, art history, etc. would be worthwhile. Keep all of her best work in all media, and begin to build a portfolio that clearly supports her intended major and shows off her strengths. There are also many core curriculum requirements outside of art/design courses, even in AA programs, so don't neglect the sciences, humanities, and especially English composition. She will have to do a fair amount of writing!

The faculty at FIT is largely adjunct (teach part time while still working in our fields), very well-connected professionally, and from my experience, more than willing to help students who show interest (surprisingly, many don't). It's a school with an incredible array of resources for fashion (and other) design. Good luck-

I'll concur with lishy. My D had a very good portfolio, has been sewing since she was 12, was in the Parsons and Moore summer programs and has already had dresses shown in NY fashions shows, but her GPA was just under 3.0 at a top private school. She got waitlisted at FIT but accepted at Syracuse, Drexel and Moore for Fashion Design. She got rejected at Parsons and Pratt. Good news is she just got pulled off the waiting list at FIT and we sent in our deposit yesterday! She can't wait to start.

My daughter is attending the Pratt pre-college program in fashion design and wants to to to Pratt, FIT or Parsons. Any idea on Pratt and how it ranks vis a vis FIT or Parsons or how easy it is to get in at Pratt?

Hello! I'm so much in dilema which one is better school.Wish if someone could clearly dimarcate the differences between the two colleges.
I believe both the schools are at par . I got accepted at Parsons but I was thinking to apply again at FIT . however, I also do feel after talking to few people FIT accept bunch of high school pass out and there is more crowd there versus Parsons ..Is that true?
please tell me more..

hi ! may I ask you how is FIT's AAS program in fashion design. also, what kind of porfolio do they accept if you can elaborate and tell me It would be of great help..thank you

Hi all!

I am torn.
Would like to know which of the two offers a better, more prestigious fashion marketing program? I understand that Parsons offers only the 2 years AAS program, whereas FIT offers a choice of 1 or 2 years AAS program. Anyone here might know if the AAS program of the two schools or compatible despite it's great difference in duration?

Thank you thank you.

In an above post I gave my best answer to this question. To be honest, its a matter of personal preference. Both are great schools, neither one is perfect and no one will hold it against you if you go to Parsons instead of FIT or FIT instead of Parsons. Parsons focuses more on the art aspects of design while FIT is more focused on the construction aspects. One of my teachers (who teaches at both schools) said that Parsons has too much art and FIT has too much construction and that both schools are lacking. I go to FIT and love it. Just because we have more focus on construction does not mean that we don't have many intense art classes.

I'm an AAS student now and its great. At Parsons you go through a foundation year of general art while at FIT you go directly into fashion design. FIT is a 2+2 year school, you get your AAS first and then reapply for your BFA (though if you have a 3.0 GPA you don't have to submit another portfolio) FIT wants pure fashion design in their portfolio. Part one is 6-10 sketches of outfits you've designed. Part 2 is the home test, which changes ever couple of years; it's always a specific design challenge. My home test was: A woman is going on a weekend vacation. She can only pack one jacket, 2 bottome, and two shirts. Design four outfits using only these articles of clothing (you must use everyone at least once). State where she is going, why and what time of year it is. You also have to sew at least one garment. Just be sure to follow the directions 100%, they will NOT accept your portfolio if anything is wrong. At my interview I saw a number of people get turned away immediatly because their portfolio was done incorrectly (like if they're the wrong size or not color coppies)

I am also interested in attending either Parsons or FIT but I do have a question about the admissions process/portfolio. I currently have college credit with 3 semesters left to finish my BA in Art History. Although I enjoy my classes, I really want to venture into the design field. Do you think it is worth it for me to finish my BA in Art History, or should I go ahead and apply to the design schools now? Would it be worth an extra semester at my current state college to take some art studio classes as well? I am eager to get started in design school so I dont want to spend another two years here if it won't be worth it in the end.

Also, I know both schools are competitive to get into, but does anyone have an opinion on which one is maybe more accepting?

thanks!

Hello.
I'm finishing my Fashion Design portfolio for FIT, and I was wondering if any of you who were accepted there could give me some advice. I'm very worried about it because the portfolio instructions are very vague and there are a lot of things that are open for interpretation. Is there anything I should be aware of before sending it, or anything I should be careful with?

Thanks in advance.

lishy: My home test is the same. Where did you include the location and the season? Did you write it in a separate sheet of paper, or did you write it next to the illustrations?
Also, in the garment test, do the pictures have to be about separate garments or an entire outfit?

For my home test I think I put the location and season on each page. I showed how the outfits would transition from day to evening so I also included what she would wear each of the outfits for. I think I did a "Spring Business Trip to NYC".
I'm not sure what you mean by the garment test? When I applied we were not required to submit garments. For the ones I did submit I took pictures (both front and back) of the entire garment.

thank you, lishy.
I sent my portfolio today...I'll keep my fingers crossed 'till March... :/

I was wondering..is the Fall semester application deadline still January 1?

you should have turned in your portfolio three weeks after receiving the instructions for the home test

I am a current student at University of San Diego majoring in marketing and communications. However, I have always wanted to enter the fashion industry (brand management, marketing, etc). After browsing Parsons’ website, I am motivated to apply. I will be applying for Design and Management.
Does this major emphasis towards more “design” or “management”? I am not extremely into art, but want to receive a foundation in design also a strong background in management.
Will this program work for me?

tashers: I meant the whole application, like all of the documents and the essay, but thank you!!

I want to get into fashion. I am keen on merchandising, PR and marketing. My dream is to work for a designer. I realize it's going to require a lot of hard work and diligence. I am an honor student (Nat. Honor Society, well rounded, lots of volunteer and community work and have great references. My GPA is 3.4. I do not test well but hope to do ok on my SAT's in June (I am a hs junior).

My mom wants me to look at the business programs in marketing (Boston) in case I find out I am not 100% sure about fashion. We agree I should apply to FIT and Parsons (where I know a few alumni at both institutions and can secure great references).

Does it behoove me to seek out a tradition 4 year biz school and focus on great internships (or in the case of Northeastern co ops ) or should I go right to FIT or Parsons? I am 99% sure what I want to do and have felt this way for quite some time.

I am confused about FIT vs Parsons. What would be best for marketing and merchandising and the "biz" end of this industry?

I have great references at both and have talked to Scott Pobiner at Parsons for two years on email.

I will need financial aide big time.

I am ready for a big city and hard work.

FIT or Parsons

Thanks

I have no idea where to go! I was accepted at SCAD, Philadelphia University, FIT, Pratt, Parsons, Marist and Syracuse for fashion design. I was given 22,000 dollars from Syracuse, a full scholarship to PhillyU and various smaller scholarships to the other schools. I have nooo idea where to go. I think I want to do fashion design but maybe interior design and live near NYC. What do you think of these schools? I also cant decide between liberal art and an art school. What should I do?
