FIT v UCF Honors v Miami v UF (possible Appeal)

Before I start, I know my dad is probably gonna come on here and read this so "Hey Paps".

Anyway, I am going to be a Physics major with a specialty in Astronomy. All of the schools in the title are my choices, except for a possibility on a UF appeal. DVM I know that you are in the same exact boat as me (UF rejection, UM, or UCF Honors), although I don't know your intended major, so maybe you can be help, or anyone reading this. What do you think is the best school for a field in Physics or where would you recommend me to go. Based on professor availablity, strength of curriculum, research oppurtunities, student life, etc. I sent in the deposit for UCF Honors just to hold a spot, although I missed out on Housing in T4. Money is not necessarily a problem because I was graciously offered alot of aid at all schools, although im still 20 k in the hole for UM.
Well anyway, I probably didn't give you enough information, but any help would be great.

If you haven't visited and looked at your programs at both schools, I highly recommend that you do so now. That may be all you need to do to see yourself at one school or the other. That final visit was absolutely the determining factor when my oldest was deciding a few years ago.

My son is finishing up his freshman year at UCF Honors, and he has had a great year and great overall experience. He's majoring in mechanical engineering, but some of his friends are physics majors.

My last advice would be to really embrace your new school, wherever you end up. I think that's a huge part of why my son has had such a good year. He jumped in with both feet, got involved, made friends, and these days is almost always too busy with something he's doing to talk, which, to a mom, is a GOOD thing....

Realistically, you are probably not going to get your appeal through for UF. I do, however, wish you the best of luck. They just receive too many of those every SEMESTER for your odds to good.

As far as FIT vs. UCF Honors... I am biased because I go to UCF, but UCF has a very comprehensive and diverse Honors Program. Especially being a Physics major, you will be working with some top Engineering professors at our school that are renowned for their respective specialties.

As what mom2three said, wherever you end up, go all out. Soak up and get involved as much as you can. That will help you on your path to a successful college experience.

I chose the UCF honors college in the end. (But I am an undeclared major, leaning towards Political Science) My UF appeal didn't go through, U of Illinois didn't offer me a scholarship, New College of Florida didn't offer the type of environment I wanted, and Miami was just too close to home and the cost didn't justify choosing it over UCF honors, even with their scholarship.

UCF is supposed to have the best engineering program in FL behind UF from what I hear though, so you shouldn't worry.

best in FL and definitely on the map nationally... yes, i said nationally

Hey, I'm new here, sorry I didn't join earlier to help you out!

I graduated from FIT with an Astronomy/Astrophysics degree. The program is very good! My impression from opinions of professors is that there are only two good schools in Florida to go to for astronomy: FIT or UCF. You chose one of the two, so you chose well. Best of luck to you!

Edit: Actually, upon further thought, I could be mixing up UCF and UF. UF's astronomy dept. website is rather impressive, while UCF's is lacking.... Oh well, I hope it works out for you.

Second edit: Yeah, now I'm fairly certain I got mixed up and meant UF. Sorry about that. On the bright side, UCF is good if you want to get into the engineering side of things.

UCF News and Information

this might help your decision

UM might be a good choice. It is ranked higher than UCF and is a really nice school...good size, nice area. My S goes there and they are so accomodating. Whenever we call we always get immediate responses.

Nice perk near the beach and Coconut Grove. The surrounding area is much nicer than UCF. My S looked at UCF too and decided UM. It felt more managable in size, he was afraid of just being a number at UCF. He liked that UM is very diverse with kids from all over the world, not just Florida.

It's a tough decision though.
Good luck!
