FIT vs Pratt vs New Paltz vs RIT vs Syracuse Jewelry Design major

HI guys~
Want to apply for Sp16
Which one of them has better jewelry design major, I want to earn a BFA in Metals and Jewelry Design / Jewelry Design.
I did some research, seems like FIT only has AAS degree (at least that’s what I know so far~)
Since I am a NYC resident FIT and Pratt are more convenient, then between FIT and Pratt which one has better jewelry?
Also I am not for sure if I could be accepted be them.(i’m an ESL er, and Fine art wasn’t my major when I graduated in my hometown) So~~ how are New Paltz vs RIT vs Syracuse? Are those school have higher acceptance rate?
how are their majors in jewelry design?
how about the tuition,scholarship?

Schol list:

FIT
Pratt
SUNY-New Paltz
Rochester Institute of Technology
Syracuse University

any other schools in NY or closed has good jewelry design major are welcome to suggest~

I’m so rambling,confusing…

Help please~

Thank you!

I know nothing about jewelry design but Pratt offers the BFA in that, correct? I believe it’s one of the departments in the School of Fine Art. I think jewelry is a special case because you see it in among the Fine Art offerings but it’s really a design field (though for sure you would need to have a real sense of artistry as well).

I’d start asking around or checking out school rankings online. Check out foundation year at these places, too, because I’d think you’d definitely want to have exposure to art and design fundamentals: drawing, light, color, 3D objects, etc. So you’d want a program with a rigorous foundation year as well as a good reputation for jewelry making.

Thanks~ My dream school is RISD, but consider the expenses and admitted rate~so…
Yeah, I noticed the areas of emphasis under the Fine art major, one of them is Jewelry. I checked some websites, most of them only provided some info such as Percent Admitted/Average SAT/ACT/H.S. GPA/Retention Rate and popular majors, but I want dig more~you know~ I want to know more about jewelry Design these colleges offered.
btw could you tell me your major if you don’t mind`?

Surely. My D will be starting at Pratt this fall. Her major will be communications design. So she’ll be in the school of design.

Something like jewelry design would probably require a bit of digging because it’s such a specialty field. Also, I’m wondering if you limit yourself by searching just for “jewelry design” as opposed to “metal smithing” (which may include jewelry) as well.

Good luck with your search and if I hear anything else I’ll be sure to post.

Congrats~!! Pratt is a REALLY nice school also has a real campus which is rare in this city~!
I will definitely check it out~Guess I was focus too much on “jewelry” part~ Thank you so much for your advice~~!

On behalf of my D, thanks. She is very excited!

Pratt MWP (the campus up in Utica) also has jewelry, I think. Also, Cleveland Institute of Arts (not in New York, about 8 hours away?).

If you google NASAD jewelry metal you might find a bunch of NASAD schools (stand alone colleges as well as larger universities) that offer a BFA in jewelry design. You already have a great list going - there may be more in NY that you find from that google search.

I checked Alfred but I don’t think they offer the major. How about Cornell? (there are actually two of them up there in Ithaca now).

Also, you should definitely visit some of these. Some programs may be “ranked” higher than others but if the school doesn’t feel right it won’t be a good fit.

Good luck!

Check out Temple University! It has a great art school and a metals/jewelry program. It’s in Philly and offers very generous merit scholarships.

Thank you so much~!! Recently I am looking for some summer class. FIT and Pratt provide JD courses, maybe I could check them out~!

Yeap~It has really good rankings in that major~Did you go to school there?
