The last few pounds are often the trickiest! Stubborn, those pounds!
@jackief - Sometimes ya need to keep at holding pattern for a while. You have been getting into good fitness habits, and that is a true victory!
One thing I found disappointing was that dang, . after I lost almost 15% of my body weight, the daily calorie need would be 15% lower. I’m up a few pounds now, hoping to restart running now that I have more time (assuming my left knee agrees it is a good idea).
I biked for an hour on my indoor bike both yesterday and today. I was hoping it would “cool off” after the storm came through, but it’s still incredibly humid.
After seriously increasing our wine intake for four months during COVID, we’re trying to cut back to mostly drinking only on weekends. I had that rule for many years, but over the last year or so I’ve started drinking more, and during COVID we have found ourselves drinking almost every night.
Do you ever wonder how people who don’t exercise manage not to be hugely overweight! Here we are busting our buns doing all kind of exercise and trying to eat decently and we still battle the weight issue! Can you imagine if you DIDN’T exercise!?
If I didn’t exercise, I’d only need ~1400 calories/day. I can consume that without blinking. That being said, when I hurt my knee and did very little for 6 months, I didn’t gain weight. I just wasn’t hungry at all ever. It was very strange!
Speaking of strange, today was strange. I felt good. Ran to the gym and felt pretty decent. I would not have gone, but my old PT asked me a work related question and I wanted to deliver her the email with all the answers. I put it in a Ziploc bag and hand carried it so it wouldn’t get sweaty. While there, I did the stairmonster for 30 min and felt AWFUL! My quads did not want to fire at all. At all. Did I mention they didn’t want to fire at all? But then the run home was pretty snappy. Weird. Video was that Barre Blend Total Body. Can’t say I liked it, but there were a very brief moments where I might have cracked a semi-smile. That alone is very strange. Finished with some stretching/yoga.
^^^ I am tired just reading all that…!
3 mile walk/run this morning. I’ll do something else this evening. I have managed to keep up “2 a days” nearly everyday since quarantine time. 1-2 walks a day, run 3-5 days a week, indoor bike once a week.
The hiking club is doing one of my favorite hikes this Sunday and the leader is great. She is going to do 14 miles, with hills (< a big deal for flat Illinois).
I checked in with another club member and she confirmed what another member told me a few weeks ago — in general, there have been few masks and almost no distancing — and turnout has been good (+30 ppl)
I think my mind is playing tricks with me because when I think of the hike, I imagine the chatting & laughter & catching up with people, and the tailgating afterwards.
I find I need to remind myself, repeatedly, that it is not going to be the same experience as pre-COVID & the enjoyable parts I’m missing will not be available, safely.
Yesterday, I pressed 77# for 3 doubles, but could not manage a triple.
Dreading squatting today. The peril simulator!
@Midwest67 I wish you could “request” a little space for hiking and then SD at the tailgating. You are entitled to a fun SAFE experience!!! Hiking is for health, SD and masks are for health!!
I was discussing with H over coffee this morning and really, I can go up there and hike that trail any time, by myself, or invite 1-2 people.
No need to go with a big group and having to manage people getting too close to talk.
I miss my club! The way it used to be!
@Midwest67 - I like your H’s suggestion, but I also get the feeling of missing the club.
As you know, I have been running solo or only with a handful of people. They are great people, friends of mine, etc. but I still miss the days of running with the club. Just pulling into a parking lot of a shopping center/school/community pool on a Saturday morning and seeing a bunch of people gathering to run or walk together…
I’m with you , though. It’s way too many people for my comfort level right now and while there is a list of very specific group run rules, I know that the group contains some people who won’t follow. I just don’t think it’s worth it.
That said, I have continued to run 4/5 days/week and am getting in some longer runs. I have found that some days I am really picking up the pace, too. I continue with yoga 3x/week (virtual) and some strength workouts on line 2x/week. I am hoping that when we are back to some version of safe and normal, I will find myself doing well (for me) in races. That’s something I can aspire to.
And I ran 7 miles this morning at a good pace (for me).
I have been managing 2/day walk/run outings as well. Otherwise I sit too much, not to mention eat and drink too much. I know more neighbors and all the wildlife in my neighborhood now. And I still have a little Covid belly. I snack too much at home.
I miss my workout friends, too. Swim friends I can see again in our tightly controlled lap swimming sessions at the pool. It isn’t the same, but it is something. No more of those free wheeling conversations in the locker room, which is closed, no meeting for lunch or coffee or taking trips to competitions. I am not ready for spin class or any indoor class. Some I can do online, but I miss chatting, commiserating, eyerolling at ultra hard moves. @FallGirl Not sure if I am getting better, but I am holding my ground. I am more likely to be on time these days since I appreciate my workout time more. In honor of our founder, I am going to try to post more here.
Popping in to say despite the peril simulator, I hit 176# for 2 triples (squat).
Light/volume deadlifts felt great.
Elbows (tendonitis) still having good days & bad days. Ordered a Thera Band and I’ll let you know if it turns out to be a waste of $17.50
I think I’m ready to order an accurate digital scale. Nothing fancy (it doesn’t need to connect to any apps via WiFi)
MFP is set for 2000 calories per day, and I feel like I have to choose carefully to hit 150 grams of protein and not fly over 2000.
I think it’s enough calories bc I’m still able to add a little weight to the bar (although upper body is so hard!)
Tomorrow is a rest day, and I’m meeting my brother at the shooting range, and target practice is always fun.
Wow - 150 grams of protein a day. That’s a lot, I assume high due high amount of exercise and lifting. I aim for 60-ish gram protein/day, but I am usually happy to see 50+ grams logged. MyNetDiary has started sending me weekly log, so I know last week avg was 57. Probably should work again on increasing.
For several months, my with running hobby was on hold due to severe time constraints from home and work obligations,. But this is my first week of retirement, and today I got out to the local lake trail. DH and I both walked about a half hour, and then I opted to walk home for another 30 minutes. For people like me with short legs, it seems a myth to say brisk walk = 15 min mile pace. I checked for a few minutes, and it was 20 min/mile (admittedly it was hot, but probably I am just as slow in cooler weather with no mask… just less hot and sweaty). It really does not matter, except to make my typical running pace look not as horrible.
Congratulations on your retirement @colorado_mom !
@colorado_mom Congrats on retirement! (and just a tad jealous )
Not a terrible morning. Low 70s with 90% humidity is still awful, but sadly it does feel a lot better than the last few weeks. Run was slightly peppier for parts, but I also puttered out for parts. Just trying to keep moving forward until November. Video was Week 3, shoulder intervals. I like this format. 3 groups of 3 sets of 2 lifting exercises/1-30 sec HIIT exercise. It moves fast and I don’t get bored. Finished with abs.
I generally aim for 1 gram/# of body weight for protein, but I know I usually fall a bit short. Close is good enough for me.
I have tried to up my protein, but I find it really difficult. I’m a meat eater, but don’t eat much red meat. Fish, eggs, cheese, and plain Greek yogurt (local brand from a mom and pop Greek store) are my main sources of protein. I would have a protein shake, but I found most of them taste like chalk. Does anyone have a recommendation for a protein shake that tastes good?
Getting my bike today. I did a yoga class earlier this morning that’s geared toward strengthing hamstrings/glutes/and core in order to prevent/help low back pain. It’s one of my favorite yoga classes (on Zoom). The instructor also records the class and sends it to everyone who signed up, so I can do the class again on my own.
The bike!!!
Swam a little less than usual, 2400m because I had to go to an (outdoor) meeting. In my wet suit to boot—the wetness kept me cool. Took the morning walk, which was a walk this morning and saw few deer because I got out fairly late.
I admire all the dedication on this thread. I’m having a hard time pushing myself to do what I know I need to do. I’ve been pretty good with my PT exercises but I’ve not gotten out and walked in weeks. I’ve done a bit of Pilates to try to keep my core strong but I’m just not feeling the motivation. I noticed today that my gym is starting up my favorite class again this week. I’ve not gone since they reopened and for now they are limited to outside. The class is called power max and focuses on strength training with hand weights with a bit of core Pilates thrown in and it’s a great instructor who is a good motivator. The class is located on an outdoor patio and I’d bring my own mat. I’m going to think about trying it next week.
@mom60 , as they say, "the first step (out the door, on the bike - whatever) is the hardest! You will probably feel good when you finish your first class!
