Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Husband is a former small college swimmer who has done master’s swimming. So has his brother. They both have only wonderful things to say about master’s groups. They found people to swim with and swimming can be a very lonely sport. But they also talk about that there are plenty of new swimmers. With the popularity of triathlons, people can run and they can bike but they don’t know how to swim. So they come, to learn and get better.

So master’s swim groups are really good for all abilities.

I had a wonderful 5k run this morn, 60 degrees. It was still a pain to be wearing the mask a lot, but doable - beat my times of last week by 3 minutes. Of course my times last week were almost double of @ClassicMom98 (22 min is FAST!). But that’s OK - my main goals are to get some outdoor exercise (“anti-sitting”) and stay uninjured.

Today I did something different and had some breakfast after the run (actually part2 of breakfast - I usually have a poached egg a half hour before I run) at the shore of the lake. It was lovely. Then a bit more walking to listen to more podcast. It’s been nice to be retired, not have to rush back to continue working.

^^^ @colorado_mom that sounds DELIGHTFUL!!!

Mouth drop on @ClassicMom98 and a 22 minute 5k!!!

Had about a week off CC getting ready for a 5 day get away and then having that get away!! The area we were in was not real conducive for walking or running (we were on a dead end street and then narrow rural roads with a fair amount of traffic nearby - I’m not that desperate and it was actually nice to have a rigid break!) BUT we visited local parks/dunes and hiked and climbed dunes each day.

Back on the horse with a short run this morning before an early day at the office.

Welcome back @abasket !

Welcome back @abasket ! I usually like to take time off when I’m on vacation. Vacation time = family time and I do enough as it is.

Today was another positive morning. I did my planned Monday run that got switched up. I think I was 2 minutes faster than the last time that I did it. And I felt good and ran/walked an extra long c/d for a bit over 11 miles for the morning. Then, it was a legs 50-50 (lift, then HIIT). My legs were trashed after that. Finished with some abs.

I got off at 1pm again. I can’t wait. I was so sleepy a bit ago. for the last week+ my allergies have acted up at 11am. Don’t know why, but I have been just icky feeling then. Usually it’s in the early afternoon when I feel blechy. In any case, I am looking for to my afternoon nap today. It’s muggy, but overcast/rainy. Perfect day to snooze away.

I sometimes run on vacation. We visit family in Cape Cod, and I really love the flat canal trail or seat-to-sea trail. I go in the morning. when cooler. If humid, I struggle since accustomed to dry Colorado. But if conditions are ideal, my 5k time is better than usual due to being at sea level rather than 5000 ft altitude.

^^^ I LOVE running on vacation! We just literally didn’t have the pavement in an appropriate way where we were unless I drove to another spot.

I actually have a list of all the states I’ve run in - I need to double check the amount!! A fun thing to keep track of.

I like vacation running, too, but do less of it than when I was younger. I used to drag my poor H on all kinds of adventure runs. Now I sleep later.

Mostly swimming. The water has been cooler so it has been great. I have to get up early to run or it is too hot here and I have had trouble dragging myself out of bed. The days I don’t run I generally do take a walk, though.

All this weight lifting talk makes me miss the gym.

If possible I run on vacation. Last year I ran in a park in Dublin and in Hyde Park in London. I ran in Central Park with my daughter when she lived in NYC. I have also run in H’s hometown in Illinois. The perimeter of that town is 3 miles. I know because I have run it several times!

I have also put in miles on hotel treadmills in many locations.

I too miss the gym. I put my membership on hold for 9 month. I should probably just cancel, but I really don’t want it to go out of business before I retire.
I rode my bike 27 miles yesterday, but nothing today. I will likely ride inside tomorrow, while I’m waiting for my car to be serviced, and then do a longish ride Sunday.
My son, who just started riding my old bike since COVID, is going to have logged over 100 miles this week. He’s getting into it. He lives in an area with multiple bike paths easily accessible. Of course now he’s thinking of a new bike, but he knows that’s not smart right now. There are no deals to be had.

^^^ Yes, he might not have a new bike until spring!!!

When our kids are on vacation together, they try to go running (and visit an Irish bar, but not relevant to this thread). After DS’s graduation, we went on our first trip to Europe with them to Rome, Venice and Munich. They took early morning runs in each place and mentioned Venice was hard (lots of stairs up/down to cross the bridges over canals). Their travel tip - 2 gallon ziplocks for the stinky clothes and sneakers.

I think its relevant

12 mile run in hot, humid weather this morning. Took it slow, but still…that’s a long run.
Four more weeks until the virtual half, I think we are ready.

Definitely no deals, because there are NO bikes. I have spent several weeks tracking down a bike. Finally got one.

Decent week lifting. Same old aches and pains. Seriously considering hiring an online coach, as it gets more difficult to add weight to the bar.

Highlight of Instagram this week is a woman who posted her progress after 2 years of barbell training.

She is in her early 40s. Started out weighing 228# and has put on 11 pounds in 2 years, but her body has done some major recomposition.

She posted before and after pics, and one thing I love about it is she has a mere mortal’s body, an older female who has popped out some kids, not a fitness model’s body.

She has learned to love her body for what it can do.

Her current stats are impressive! Squat 245#, DL 300#, Bench 135#, Press 97.5#

I don’t know if her account is private or not. howitzer.lifts if anyone is interested.

4 mile part run, part walk today with a scheduled SD chat with a friend in a park halfway through. Ran there, walked back.

Of interest perhaps to this fitness group…I was on a work call Friday with a lot of pediatricians. It was mentioned that they are seeing school aged kids (so like 6-12 crowd) coming in for well checks and having skyrocketing BMI’s. School at least provides some activity and time away from the refrig and cupboards. Kids stuck at home may be in neighborhoods where they can’t safely go out and play. It really struck me.

@abasket

It’s tough out there. So many addictive things, including food.

Dopamine hits for everybody!

I’m suffering a bit this week trying to weigh the pros and cons about exercising in poor air quality. I miss the air-conditioned gym…

Another outside yoga class with running friends. Kept the mask on the entire practice and didn’t even think about it. I stayed a few minutes after to chat with some friends and especially to catch up with one I hadn’t seen in some time. It’s so different practicing with a different teacher and with the mat on the ground (really challenging in the balance poses!), but it’s good for the body and mind to change it up a bit.

Came home and rowed while I watched church service on line. H rode on the bike.

I like to run my 5k lake-loop trail every other day (or sometimes 2 days in a row). I skipped 2 days due to concern of air quality from CO wildfires, but I went back early morn today. It seemed OK …except that darn - I forgot my water, was glad to have remembered my Necco wafers.

When I started running in 2017, Necco wafers became my pocket snack for the trail. That enables me to only carry a small water bottle. I bought 20 or more big rolls when they stopped making them. Just as I was at the end of my stash last month, I did my usual scan of Walgreen’s candy aisle, to see if the rumors or reincarnation were true…and HOORAY! Necco wafers are back on the shelves
