I think there isn’t a “right” way for say a 5k run - there is the way that works for you. Unless you skipped dinner the night before or haven’t eaten in 20 hours I think most would be ok with no nourishment before heading out.
Do you wear a pouch of some sort? I’m assuming so if you have Neccos. Maybe carry one of the mini Kind bars or something for emergency nourishment.
Yep… all sorts of combos of pouches and bottom and top pockets (including bike shirts). I’ll get some bars that are less “melty” than what I have now.
It’s nice being retired, trying new habits. When I worked, I had to get up really early and be on the laptop a while before running - check email etc (most coworkers were in other timezones, from 2 to 12 hours offset from Colorado). So I always ate, with egg being a food I knew worked well.
Update - My 8am 5k run this morn was fine without food first (other than 2 small sections of a cutie orange). I had a fruit/grain bar in my pocket, but I didn’t eat it until after my run… at a picnic table with great view of the lake, with Rocky Mountain backdrop.
@abasket You can take your vitamin D and calcium first? I am always worried that something like that will upset my stomach if I don’t time it right. But that may just be all in my head. (I am finding out that a lot of exercising, eating, and everything is affected by things that are all in my head!)
@colorado_mom I used to always eat first before exercising, but if it’s early, sometimes I feel like I am just trying to choke something down out of habit, and other times I feel a little too full even after half an hour or more. So last year I finally started skipping breakfast if I am going to work out in the morning and it is totally fine. I bring a little bag of trail mix but I have never needed it and I tend not to feel hungry at all until about 40 minutes after I am done.
I have been surprised actually at how not-an-issue it is. I really always used to think I would faint without breakfast!
@orangepurple, I have had no problem with taking it on an empty stomach with or without exercise. I am not one to have a sensitive stomach.
I literally take it first thing when I come downstairs in the morning. Walk straight to the cupboard for a glass of water and the pills. If I don’t do it then, I won’t remember.
During the week I take my breakfast to work so I don’t eat anything at home. I get up at 6 and don’t eat breakfast till 9 when I take a break at my desk and eat something.
@itsgettingreal21 - when you get stitches in your side on a run, try raising your arms overhead for a few minutes or taking deep breaths.
5 mile slow “fun run” with my group this morning. Saw 2 enormous vultures sitting on a fence. One had it’s wings spread and it was about 5-6 feet! At lease we saw no snakes!
I will catch up on reading posts when my iPad get fixed (hopefully- the fix I was to be charged 300 bucks for didn’t work), but figured I’d jump on to say I did 25/40/16 or so biking bikes over the last 3 days. It’s gorgeous here, so I enjoyed the time on my bike.
I hiked 14 very hilly miles yesterday with the club. I don’t know what I was thinking! The leader has a reputation for hiking FAST.
It was too many miles, way too fast, with too many unrelenting hills and not enough breaks. I think the last time I hiked was in May? On flat terrain. Then before that in December?
Anyhow, me, and another female in her mid-70s pulled up the rear. Haha! My quadriceps just above the knees were on FIRE. Cramping up at one point towards the end – it was the StairMonster on those hills!
I’m really glad I went though. It was a smaller group, about 12, and I knew everyone. The rain, by some miracle, stayed just to the south of us. It was cool and just lovely.
It was a long day. Left at 7:30 am to get there. We hiked from 9:30 to 3:30. Another 1.5 hours back home, and I had to stop to get groceries on the way.
On a different subject, the dog had diarrhea overnight. It doesn’t seem possible that a little 13# dog could hold so much poop. He made it to the basement for one round, but then also went in several places on the 2nd floor.
The clean-up was absolutely disgusting, but I did not throw up.
I toyed with the idea of taking him to the ER Vet (of course, it’s a holiday!), but he is drinking normally, and acting normally.
I opted to not run today due to wildfire smoke last night scaring me out of it. Fire is distant, but winds yesterday brought smoke our way. Yikes - ash on the patio this morn.
Tomorrow I probably won’t be able to run due to cold/snow. After a long spell of hot weather, things are a changin.
High temp predictions (which likely won’t be exactly accurate) in my area of CO:
Mon - 90
Tues - 30  (good for the fire fighters)
Wed - 35
Thurs - 46
Fri - 53
Sat - 52
Sun- 67
Mon - 71
tues -75
Yesterday, 100-102 (106 high) degrees at time of run. Smokey. My trail run turned into a 3.5 mile run and then 1.5 mile run and walk. Brutal, but then today happened.
Today, 102-104 (108 high) degrees. Smokey. Light snatches and muscleups. The HIIT was a combo of rowing, wallballs, deadlifts, push presses and pull-ups.
Guys, please be careful with the smoke! Running can absolutely wait!!!
@Midwest67 I was thinking of you today. So glad though an intense workout, that you went and enjoyed it. You’ll build back up your endurance but geez the leader sounds like she could have held back just a bit!
Touching base. We’ve had record highs (107 today) and smoke, so, while I feel lazy, I haven’t been running much this last week. I’m trying to do some indoor stuff, but I confess that I’ve never been an indoor exerciser by choice (except when I danced). That’s changing as I can intellectually override my penchant for outdoor activity, but…I’ll be back when I’m doing more.
I might not be in quite as foul of a mood at this moment, so I’ll check in. We had a great weekend visiting older S. Weather was beautiful and we spent a fair amount of time outside… (though no exercise - I had 2 days off) But outside time means I pay for it later. My eyes were just slits yesterday morning, and I have a killer sinus headache today. And coming back from a get away is always rough for me mentally. I just putted to the gym and did a slow stairmonster and putted home. A raccoon tried to be my running bud, but one scowl from me and he scurried away. Smart creature. My video ticked me off. beachbody keeps messing with their app and every time it makes it worse. Now, it randomly deletes all my offline content. WiFi doesn’t reach the shed (or the gym) so I need to use downloaded content. I checked it before I ran/gym/ran and it was there. Went to lift, and it was all gone. OMG. And now they’ve screwed it up that even downloading it takes FOREVER, so I just streamed it over my data. Ugh. And then when I finished and was taking off my shoe, I stepped funny and strained my AT and am now limping. Beautiful. And then I got to come to work. Whee! As I said, the raccoon was smart to scurry away…
On a positive note, I am SO thankful that my kids are doing OK, otherwise I don’t know what I’d do with myself today. I probably wouldn’t get out of bed. We met GF this weekend. She was lovely and so easy to talk to. That’s saying a lot from me. I don’t care to talk to anyone much, but for some reason I could with her.
Running is on hold for a week or so for me. I wiped out on my mountain bike this weekend on a fast descent and had to make a trip to the ER for stitches. Left hip has a bad contusion and my left knee is scraped up. Oh and a black eye.
And @ClassicMom98 I’ll give a thumbs up for the positive parts of your post like the GF and the great visit with your son! Hope you feel better as well!
