Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I had an odd number of kids at high school girls practice so essentially played 30 minutes of soccer last night.

With winter coming fast and still not going to the gym, I bought a treadmill and got it set up yesterday. It’s in my otherwise beautiful sunroom but I’m willing to have the eyesore for the exercise

^^^ But how great that you get to see outside while inside!

We have a sunroom we use year around (Ohio) and we still have a piano there from when D1 played. I have thought about getting rid of it - probably the right size for a treadmill!

For those of you putting treadmills in heated/cooled space, make sure you have a good fan! We have several fans for our bike and treadmill area. It really helps.

I really like the stationery bike I bought (used) last week. It’s a Nordic Track. I’ve used it twice and we hauled it down to our vacation place. We’re here for a few weeks while repair work is going on at our house. I’m thinking about subscribing to iFit, which provides provides workout for the bike and, I guess, some that involve small weights.

I’m one of those missing posters. Time just slipped away. My life is mostly the same: run 3-4x a week, swim 4x.

I am slowly increasing the running distance, though, working towards a half marathon by January 1st. The weather is cooler so now is the time to do it.

The pool is emptier as the weather gets cooler. It is easier to get a lane. I am doing the work out with the guy in the next lane more often. That makes me work harder and makes counting laps easier. Team work!

Oh yes, and I went back to the weight room this week! The gym is pretty empty most of the time and we must make a reservation to enter. I picked a time when I would be the only person and went. I just did a machine circuit, paying attention to how it all works now, you know, all the sanitizing and mask wearing. I’ll start with once a week then add another day as I get a sense of when the gym is not crowded. I was a little sore, which felt good.

Another missing poster here: I’ve been running ~3 miles multiple days/week, walking on other days. I’m toying with buying a barbell, but need to just go use a friend’s for a week or two to see if I actually like this before I commit. (Well, before I go figure out if they are even available in the Covid times.)

@illneversaynever

Rogue had Ohio bars recently. Craigslist had Rogue bars & plates at next to new pricing.

Travel day back home for us today. Goodbye beach, but at least the weather at home is fall-ish. I did a 30 minute walk before we hit the road. Didn’t do any upper body stuff on the trip, so I’ll need to get back to the TRX and dumbbells at home.

Ran my first Army 10 Miler this morning. I live in Northern Virginia so I really had hoped to be downtown to run this year, but that was not to be. Three of my friends and I ran on the W & OD. I was pleased to run a PR of 1:44:40 (10:27 min/mile). The cool weather helped.

A few years ago I would never have dreamed that this was possible for me. I think that’s where I get a lot of my motivation, if you keep going you really can do so much more than you think you can.

I’ve had a similar experience!

I remember my first form check with a Starting Strength Coach & telling him I was only going to train twice a week. That’s it! No more!

But as I saw my strength increase so fast in the beginning (best thing about being a novice!) I got hooked!

I’m lifting more weight than I thought possible and I recognize I can still make slow but steady progress.

What fun to experience this sort of thing! (Maybe not so unusual for those with a history of being athletic!)

Sadly wildfire smoke impacts the air quality, and I decided not to run yesterday or today. That did give me extra time to catch up on some errands and finally finish my election ballot (Colorado has MANY extra Amendments, Propositions etc to consider). I did set a goal for today to at least search out my old hand weights. I think some are stashed in the garage. One might be in the bathroom vanity because I used to use it when brushing my teeth with the other hand.

@colorado_mom, I laughed at the “used to use it when brushing my teeth…”
That’s the kind of thing I would do. I may actually take one up there. I leave weights in the TV room, so I can use them while watching TV.
I walked 4 miles with a friend today, then came home and rode my indoor bike setup for about 45 minutes while I finished a book.

That’s a great pace @FallGirl - you embrace the race!!!

@1214mom - I have an electric toothbrush with timer. Two minutes is pretty boring if you are not doing something. There was a time when I tried harder to always brush the full two minutes, so I tried using a weight or doing wall sits. Now I usually just do one leg at a time on the hamper for a stretch.

I do squats, butt taps, high knees, butt kicks and calf raises while my electric toothbrush is working. I get a good warmup for running/walking/yoga or whatever is planned that day.

Yay, in the garage I found l little (but heavy) bin with my old hand weights - 1lb, 2lb, 3lb, 6lb. It also had some other stuff, including hand gripper things that years ago I used at the computer, like these - https://www.amazon.com/fit-Starter-Hand-Grips-1-Pair/dp/B00C87JKCW/ref=asc_df_B00C87JKCW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167126942833&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6049489360909264981&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1014570&hvtargid=pla-311801664153&psc=1

DANG - my hand strength definitely declined in past years, surprisingly harder to squeeze on right (dominant hand). I’ll keep them handy to use during TV commercials.

Great solo hike today. Drove up to Wisconsin and hiked just under 10 miles of hills in fall colors.

I was happy to go at my normal stride with time to take pictures and observe the surroundings — instead of the club’s usual bat outta Hell pace.

I hiked four hours and that was plenty.
Saw a salamander!

It was in the 30s, but I avoided the rain. Good day!

Good weekend of activity. Walking, running, LOTS of yard work. I’ve almost made it around my MOVE ring twice today!

Husband and I rode 28 miles. On the second half I rode pretty quickly, because we decided not to go for 40. It was a good day, and the weather is great.
