Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

@1214mom when you do that many miles (28 or 40!) are you on a paved trail? Neighborhood streets? Combo of city streets? Country roads?

No running this weekend (and possibly none for a few more days, due to wildfire smoke and bad air quality).

Now that I’ve actually found my old weights, I gave them a try using Blender video site (bookmarked a month or two ago based on a recommendation here). The easiest one seemed to be Tank Top Workout (9 minutes, level 2). I only used 1 lb weights but still expecting there may be soreness tomorrow. Gotta start somewhere.

The Fitness Blender videos are pretty good. That’s what I use for strength training.

Walked 3.5 miles with H yesterday morning. We are exploring some new paths (for us) in our neighborhood. I went to my second 261 Fearless meeting yesterday and one of my running buddies joined me and agreed it is fun. We did some active games, some fitness stations, a short run and worked on running form. A lot of activities to keep moving.

A belated congrats to your Army 10 miler! How exciting to see such improvement. You’ve worked hard and it shows

Recently added a boxing routine called “10 Rounds” to my fitness program (streaming from Beach Body). It’s an incredible workout and is really fun. Goes by very fast. Each session focuses on certain boxing skills and they have you do 10 rounds (3 minutes per) with 30 second breaks. Awesome total body fitness. Great for core and legs. Lost 15 pounds in 6 weeks and am starting it again (it’s a 6 week program). Probably makes me sweat more than anything I’ve ever done.

^^A lot of my workout peeps loved that one. I like Joel’s LIIFT4, but boxing isn’t my thing. I started The Work last week. I did it back in April and loved it. 2nd time around I’m feeling more coordinated. I also bought a pull-up assist. I am pretty good at pull-ups (for an aging lady), but there’s no way I can do all that’s required in the program without kipping (and even with kipping lol). I’ve enjoyed using it thus far.

Glad to see you back @ClassicMom98 How’s your running and gym work going? I liked hearing about your early morning accomplishments!

Settled in back home and getting back into the routine. 75 minute walk/run this morning with my friend. Just a hint of fall! Felt good with no foot pain.

Nice to hear about @HighTide2020 fall walk… even better yet if no pain.

I’ve avoided outdoors due to wildfire smoke, but around noon today it seemed a reasonable time to go. It was cooler than ideal for my bike-to-trail / 5k run. Had to do out/back method rather than my usual lake loop so I could be better poised for bail out if needed. That worked well for dropping my jacket at the bike at water break half way through.

For arm workout later, I hope to be lifting a martini at the outdoor patio of our favorite local restaurant (conveniently located near ballot drop off site). That’s assuming the predicted 5pm weather warm-up happens.

@abasket, usually when I report mileage, it’s usually on a bike path or VERY uncrowded road so I know how long it is. Most are paved (Not always well paved) or gravel paths. I don’t do mountain biking.
When I ride around our neighborhood I measure by time.
I try hard not to ride on busy streets, but sometimes I will do it. I live between DC and Baltimore, and there is just too much traffic around here to ride on roads much, even the less traveled ones.
My son lives near a couple of bike paths, so we will ride the busy streets just to get to the path.
The Eastern Shore of Maryland is a great place to ride on the country roads, but I don’t get there as often as I’d like.

I read an article today about the new high end Peleton bike. I don’t want to give DH any ideas, since our current model does just fine. It sounds like one of the big upgrades is that you can flip the screen around so you can watch it more easily for weights, yoga etc. after you get off the bike. Definitely pricey, but they are betting on the number of folks who don’t want to go back to their gyms.

@HighTide2020, we have thought about buying equipment instead of going back to the gym.
When I checked at some point, it seems like exercise bikes in my range were not readily available.
I am too cheap to get a Peleton, but I would like a nice quality bike similar to what they have at the gym.
I wouldn’t feel comfortable buying a bike without trying it out.
For now I’m just using the piece of equipment I got in 1993 (first pregnancy or I would have no idea about age) that makes an outdoor bike an indoor bike.

I meant to comment this weekend on @sushiritto 's comment about mixing it up.

One thing I have liked about going to an online class is that I get one workout from my usual instructor (who I also work out with T/Th on the 24Hour Fitness live app) and two from a new-to-me instructor that taught other classes, usually a level higher. She does a lot of combo moves that just land differently. I can tell because I’m sore in so many new places. And during her workouts, I’m consistently in the 150s bpm.

I didn’t start until after 8, but I got 40 minutes in on the indoor bike. Better than sitting in front of the TV, right?

@HighTide2020 I’m doing OK on the fitness front. Still the same old, same old routine. Looking forward to the first frost so my allergies will die down. I have been enjoying the cooler weather at least. We went to a cabin in a state park in the mountains near younger S last weekend. (The kids joined us for a night.) I ran Saturday morning. It was perfect. Leaves were gorgeous. Temps were in the 30s. I just clipped away an hour and appreciated the fact that I can run for an hour and it be no big deal. Who knows how much longer that will last.

Good to hear from you @ClassicMom98 That sounds like a lovely run. I developed allergies about 15 years ago in the fall- never had them before. We get a lot of ragweed in Texas. Fortunately, Flonase seems to do the trick.

Jogged 10 minute stretches and walked 2 minute stretches for 75 minutes this morning. Been sitting too much since then!

@“Youdon’tsay” IMO, mixing it is the right way to go. Otherwise, you work the same muscles over and over again while ignoring other muscles. And we have lots of muscles in our bodies.

I’ve noticed several gym members over the past few weeks who appear to have adopted movements that suspiciously look like my exercise program. Died in the wool SBD’ers (squat bench deadlift) that are doing higher volume/cardio sets instead of their usual slower, wait 5-10-15 mins in-between lifts type work. And using kettlebells, medicine balls and working their core more.

Also, I’ve had a couple guys come up to me and tell me that I’ve given them motivation to get “back in shape” aka lose unwanted weight. They just don’t want to lose their power numbers, but that’s going to be difficult. Anyway, it’s nice to hear.

FYI. The Finals of the CF Games starts this Friday. Due to Covid this year, only the top 5 men and women will compete together in-person here in Northern California for the title “Fittest on Earth.”

While the bulk of the televised coverage will be online, CBS will be broadcasting live coverage on TV Saturday from 10-Noon PST.

I’m really stressed out today. My phone is blowing up with ex-coworkers texting & asking if we have heard anything about the governor re-closing restaurants to dine-in in our area of the state.

I will lose. my. mind. if he does that.

But, for now, I am headed down to the basement to lift.

Sending support @Midwest67 .

My mind and body love cardio but I need to get past the idea that I need to be running/walking/biking for it to qualify and feel like a workout.

I’ve been thinking about trying a month of online barre by an instructor that I really like. Classes are accessible at anytime you want to do them. With the mornings being so dark and winter coming on I have thought this would 1. take care of the darkness problem in the morning to get exercise in before work. 2. Be the cross training do to pair with the cardio.

Hmmm. Decisions of any sort seem hard lately! :frowning:

Oy, I got auto corrected. “Dyed in the wool,” not “died in the wool.” ?

Oh dear, this thread almost dropped off of page 1.

Yesterday I did my usual (bike to lake trail, do 5k run) and some gardening plus a short Fitness Blender arms video. Today I almost didn’t go out because the sweet spot temperature is mid afternoon, when hubby and I plan to rake leaves together. But after texting with my fitness-encouraging daughter, I decided do my usual.
