Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

What is 261 Fearless? I just looked it up and sounds like running meets for women? Might it be something interesting for my son’s GF in Arlington (soon to be Alexandria) would be interested in? She’s mid 20s, and just moved her last summer so doesn’t have a big local friend group. He is getting very Into biking, but she was a big runner in HS and might enjoy meeting up with other women.
Thanks

Welcome back @Midwest67 ! Home is good.

@“Youdon’tsay” you aren’t the only one whose eating might be off!

What a fantastic weather weekend. HOURS outside both days. Runs, walks, OODLES of yard work. I think I actually got a sunburn today - high 70’s in Northern Ohio in November!

Next two days still nice. But, work. (gotta pay the bills!) I’ll get out but not as much as I wish I could!

Sometimes step count can be misleading. Fitbit says 14.9 K steps today. Other than a 1 mile there and 1 back for dinner. I spent the day painting and I suspect my Fitbit got confused by my arm movement.

Step count for the next 3 days will be more real as we go hike Civil War Battlefields

@1214mom - there is a 261 Fearless group in the area your S’s GF lives. The groups have a weekly get together and the workouts vary. Yesterday we did a relay race, a short run, a kickbox type type workout, etc. It’s not strictly running but the activities support running. I’m still learning about the group, but I know that they are involved in charities and have running teams. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming to new members and it would be a great way to meet people and find a group to run with if she is looking for that.

Two of the women I run with on Saturdays attended 261 with me yesterday and we had a blast. Afterward the three of us were talking and it seems as if we are all thinking of running a full marathon in 2021. This is a logical next goal for us, but something unthinkable for me a few years ago. Stay tuned.

Thanks @FallGirl, I will mention it to her.
I rode my outdoor bike for 90 minutes or so today.
I also went to an equipment store to check out elipticals and spin bikes. I think we’re now pretty confident in what we want, but we would love to find a “good deal.” (Almost impossible during COVID).

We’re in the area which has had fantastic weather for the last week. Done lots and lots of raking, and did also squeeze in a bike ride yesterday. With the shorter days, by the time we left, we had to push it to get home before dark. I had done this trail once earlier in the summer and was dragging a bit on the back stretch. I felt much stronger yesterday, but faster speed and less tiring and was strong all the way home.

^^^ ALL the raking! We have been doing yard work for 2-3 hours a day for the last few days. We do a combo of a little raking, blowing with the leaf blower and then mulching the leaves on the lawn and carrying it to the road about a million times. Price we pay (well worth it!) for being in a beautiful tree filled old neighborhood!

So I did that 2 hours of yard work today along with a brisk 2.5 mile walk and then by the time I hit the sack, 3 pup walks! Lots of time on my feet to counter act the desk work!

Apologize in advance as I have not read the previous 174 pages…lol I used to do CrossFit until I got tired of injuries that put me out of training for a week (lower back usually). Fortunately, I know my body enough where I’ll recover…but have just gotten tired of training-injury-recovery-training loop that I have switched gears and have devoted to pure body weight movements…functional training as they say? Exercise the way your body is intended to move/exert itself.

I’m a fan of interval training so I like to incorporate 20 seconds of body weight movements (i.e. pushups, squats, burpees, etc) with 10 seconds of rest (aka Tabata). I do this for 4 minutes and usually 6-7 rounds…24 - 28 minute workout.

My latest workout is 10 minutes of moderate BW (bodyweight) warmup, 25 minutes of CrossRope/Jump rope workout, 10 minutes of BW cooldown and I can get this done anywhere. Usually get all my workout training from YouTube…there is plenty. The best workout in the world is the one you can come back to. I’m a fan of deciding how much time I want to exercise and then it’s up to you what you want to do with it, much more interesting and seems to keep be interested.

Hi @FullSquishy ! Nice to see you here. We have people here who do all kinds of activities. I agree in doing what works for you and your body.

Welcome FullSquishy! There are one or two CrossFit fans on the thread!!!

Hi @FullSquishy That sounds like a good plan. Are you male or female? (Not that it matters, just curious). Injuries are NOT fun, for sure.

I have recently stumbled across an IG account called “You Look Like A Man”.

Jessica Fithen, the founder, “outs” the disgusting + sexually aggressive comments/DMs made by (mostly) men on the social media accounts of female strength athletes.

Although Jessica and the targeted women make a valiant effort to deploy their sense of humor, the vulgar comments & DMs are really something else. O.O

Recently, the YLLAM accounts were taken down by FB and IG for violating TOS. A petition and outrage ensued. Apparently, it’s VERY difficult to get FB or IG to take action against the offenders in the comments and DMs, but the AI (?) will pick up the “offensive material” in YLLAM’s social media accounts where the outing is posted.

I’m giving you the very short version of the story. It’s outrageous that female athletes have to put up with this BS negativity. Blood. boiling.

Some of the satirical Tik Tok videos linked at YLLAM are VERY funny. Some creative, hilarious people out there bringing awareness to this kind of harassment and how so many people have OPINIONS on a woman’s body.

NSFW!

There is a web site as well. www.YouLookLikeAMan.com for the blog, news, and merch. I may have to get one of those gym banners!

Welcome @FullSquishy ! I am a “light” exerciser (well compared to this group … I do exercise more than my also-retired husband and a lot of our friends). I agree that the best exercises are the ones you will do, and it makes sense to do things that keep your body injury-free. I hope you stick around and tell us some of your favorite youtube resources.

Yesterday was great. 17.7k steps at 3 different sites.

We started with just under four miles at the First Day of Chancellorsville site

Next up was about 1.5 miles at the Slaughter Pen Farm site at Fredericksburg (south of town not as well known as the slaughter at Maryes Heights. Had the attacks here been successful, the Union could have won the battle)

Ended the day with an hour long guided walk around the property where we are staying. The property’s historian showed us earthworks built during the battle at Spotsyvania Courthouse.

Today’s agenda is to hike key parts of The Wilderness Battlefield.

@abasket the house we bought last winter had years of yard neglect, so there are many leaves which have been there for years in the area they “left wild” aka totally ignored and let get overgrown. We also need to take the leaves to the dump ourselves, and 8 bags fit in the larger of our cars. DH is retired and spent several hours out there yesterday and two dump trips, I fit in a couple hours over a long lunch break. We are making progress and will get some time and dump trips in while we can. But I did not let it consume my summer when I could do other outdoor activities.

Got out early this morning for 70 minutes of walk/run with 3 10 minute run stretches. Nice morning!

Probably one of the last beautiful days here. I rode for close to 90 minutes.
May get out a little more later for a walk or another ride, but I’m good either way.

@colorado_mom - I think my post got deleted, I guess YT links aren’t allowed. I was going to post my workout routine. PM me if you are interested. Basically I do about 40 minutes of body weight/functional flow workout incorporating body weight and jump roping. I’ll mix it up doing BW HIIT’s and core ab routines. This can be done anywhere also, I do it in my garage or in the house if I’m lazy. I suggest getting a yoga mat if you have hard floors. I’m a fan of the tabata protocol (20 secs all-out / 10 secs rest - repeat 8 times for a total of 4 minutes). For example you could do:

Air squats (20 secs)
REST (10 secs)
Mountain Climbers (20 secs)
REST
High Knees (20 secs)
REST
Push Ups (20 secs)
REST

REPEAT for 5-6 reps

I try to incorporate all the muscle groups from arms, chest, abs, legs in one tabata protocol so I don’t tire one group out before the next.

I apologize in advance if I am saying something you all know…I just like to talk about this stuff.

@Midwest67 I haven’t seen any sort of negativity to a strong female body-type in the gym. As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m not big on social media, so I don’t know what’s going on there.

My gym is mainly a powerlifting and body physique gym. I for one admire large quads, glutes and muscular arms. I find them attractive.

OK, I’ll speak up. I’m the CrossFitter here. I don’t belong to a CF gym any longer (very long time), but I get my programming online. Actually, some CF gyms don’t even do their own programming. They also pay for their programming.

I’ve been a CrossFitter since 2013. I’ve had no injuries from CF. But I know my limitations, I know how to self-correct poor technique and adjust weight and volume as needed. Also, I had an excellent coach starting out.

In the past few days, the weather here in the SF Bay Area has turned kinda cold here. Lows in the 40’s and highs in the 60’s. So, any running has essentially been indoors on a treadmill. The gym is cold, since the gym’s large rollup door is kept open all day.

@sushiritto good to see you here!!! That’s some chilly weather!
