Nice morning today and got outside for an hour walk/run- not as much running as the last few outings, but I’ll take it.
Silly story about wear and running shoes. If you go into our basement, you will likely notice about 6 pairs of running shoes that look exactly alike, EXCEPT, each has the date of first use written somewhere. My husband would definitely agree about the importance of good running shoes.
@HighTide2020, I was happy to find out I could order only 1 ear bud. I called Apple, and on the first call I got an actual human I could understand, and he helped me through ordering it. It was half as much as the retail price too, so that was nice.
I was off all last week, and did a fairly good job with exercise. It’s supposed to start raining here soon, and it looks pretty windy, so I may wind up on my indoor bike today.
I am blaming @deb922 for ordering both a stationary bike and an elliptical. I went to check out the Nordic Trak ones, and wound up with a LifeFitness indoor bike and an elliptical (for the husband). We won’t actually get them for weeks, but doesn’t seem like COVID is going anywhere, so we will be happy to have them. I’m one who would go to the gym and ride the bike for 90 minutes (while reading trash novels/magazines), so I’m sure I will get a lot of use out of it.
Anyone have thoughts about an Apple watch?
Dh is way into gadgets and wants to get me one for birthday/Christmas, but I’m trying out his old Samsung watch, and I’m just not that impressed. For instance, I just did an hour-long workout, and it said I only had about 700 steps. It didn’t give me “credit” for the many minutes I spent doing squats/hammer curls, etc. I find that really annoying as I figure steps figure into the calories burned algorithm. If I’m going to have to just guess at everything, why bother with an expensive watch?
Now, this is a years-old Samsung. He thinks a new Apple would be much better, but I’m just not that interested, especially after this trial run. Does anyone have success stories using an Apple watch? I have enjoyed seeing my sleep patterns the past few nights.
@1214mom i enjoy the job of enabler ?
@“Youdon’tsay” i LOVE my Apple Watch. I know many others feel the same. It’s the best.
Raining here, well actually right now it’s snowing
I did a nice ride on the bike through Norway for 20 minutes and 20 minutes on the treadmill watching the Masters.
@“Youdon’tsay” I will be buried with my Apple watch- and I just have the 4. If I were buying new I would probably get the SE (one of the new models but not the top one). I think Apple watch is one of the truly great devices out there. I’ve had mine over 2 years and can’t be without it. I do use a Garmin GPS watch, too, for me walk/runs since our family is pretty locked into Garmin Connect and logging activities there. I don’t care as much about step count as I did when I used FitBit (which wasn’t all that accurate anyway). Apple watch has a system of rings that you try to close each day- 30 minutes of exercise, a Move (essentially calorie) ring that you can set as you choose- usually 350-600) and a Stand ring where you try for 12 hours of at least a minute stand/walk (really you need to walk). The graphics are crisp, it is pretty easy to figure everything out, and it’s just…good.
Agree with everyone above–I love my Apple watch. It is far superior IMO to the Fitbit and it’s easy to use. I rely on the rings that HIghTide mentioned above to track my exercise/movement. I have the stainless steel watch with the scratch resistant crystal. The watch looks like it’s new; there’s not one scratch. The only downside was that I didn’t buy a protective case and I dropped the watch and cracked the screen. Apple Care didn’t cover a new screen (this happened after the warranty period). I ended up having to pay (can’t remember the amount). That’s when I bought a protective case for the watch.
Fun 9.6 mile hike today. In the low 40s and VERY windy, but the rain had stopped by time the hike started.
The trail system we were on is usually used heavily by mountain bikers, but we did not see a single biker out today. Trail runners, yes. It was mostly single track, curvy path with ups and downs. It was fun to figure out footing and we had to run down some of the wet muddy parts to avoid slipping and falling. Good times.
I was an avid Fitbit wearer - I forget if I had 2 or 3 of the models - and I had been waiting FOREVER for my Blaze to die- well it didn’t exactly, but I have had my Apple Watch SE for a little over a month. LOVE. IT.
I do not have cellular. So far that’s fine with me. Each time I’m about to exercise I open an activity app (either the Apple one, Strava or Runkeeper) and press “start”. Whether I’m doing strength training or running or indoor cycling, I track it. I think I get better “credit” for the move minutes that way. I don’t track things like short dog walks.
The activity ring is for 30 minutes and cannot be moved. The “move” ring - which is actually ACTIVE calories burned (not calories burned while sitting) can be adjusted. Mine is still set for fairly active I think (640) but as weather gets worse and I can’t get in two exercise sessions a day I will have to potentially lower that for winter.
I’ll be honest I think Fitbit was giving me more credit that I may have deserved for some things - lol. Like If I was painting and moving my hands only it was counting it as steps. The Apple Watch feels like it’s a cleaner count.
That said…4pm and my rings are closed for the day! Mixed bag. Indoor cycling, a walk and an unexpected short run. (I got caught in a thunderstorm!) We have horrible damaging winds today!
@“Youdon’tsay” Get the watch! I don’t have one, but say anything fun and fancy that tracks your workouts is worthwhile. If my H offered I’d say YES. (Up until now, I have chosen running watches by how big the numbers are on the face.)
I’m doing okay here, still swimming and running and now lifting 2x/week wit the goal of bench pressing 100# by the end of the year.
OMG. I’m so happy to read this!!!
(It took me quite awhile to get to a 100# bench)
I love my Fitbit. I spend my life avoiding Apple infrastructure except the IPod (still pissed at the end of this line) so won’t go to an Apple Watch,
After 4 days without meaningful exercise except for moving furniture back into place, DW and I walked 3.5 miles (2.5 before dinner and 1 home). Add in step count from moving stuff and wandering around the house, I’m at 5.5 miles for the day.
@“Youdon’tsay” (for some reason there are quotes every time I type your user name - weird) - my husband, who is usually slow to warm up to technology, LOVES his Apple Watch.
I don’t have one, but may ask for one as a retirement present.
@“Youdon’tsay” are you an Apple product owner? Do you have an iPhone?? If you do I think an Apple Watch is even more easy to adapt to and love.
@Midwest67 I am so excited! I think it is all the swimming. Pre Covid life would get in the way and I would never go 4x a week. Now that swim spots are so dear and it is my one best chance to get out of the house and interact with people who are not H, I never miss.
I signed up for this week’s rec center remote fitness classes (it’s done week by week, unlimited classes of about 20 choices, only $5/week for seniors). I did the Zumba Gold class today. It’s an easy-ish class I did in person a few years ago. Loved being at home with the camera off, no risk of tripping my classmates or displaying my lack of coordination.
I also did a 7 minute workout (preview of “Standing” variation, as part of a New York Times winter pandemic presentation). But the most taxing workout of the day was the raking and toting leaf bags.
I’m nicely sore from the cardio strength video (30 mins) I did yesterday. Don’t undersell the videos you can do from the comfort of your own home to still get a sweaty muscle working workout! You just have to choose something that has some challenge!
I use my Chris Carmichael Max Effort spin DVD twice a week. It’s probably 20 years old. Bad hair and cheesy graphics. But it works and it helped me lose 50lbs since January.
@STEM2017 wow, keep up whatever you’re doing! Congratulations!
@abasket Thanks! Hard work. Really, really hard work. But worth every minute.
