Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

@Colorado_mom - I agree! I am also a late onset runner. It took me until my third year running before I ran a 10K. Moved up to a 10 miler a year after that and then another year for a half. I read stories of people who start running and then are running a marathon 6 months later but that’s not me!

I’m keeping up with my activity goals and my eating goals are still lagging a bit but not off the rails so I am maintaining which is fine with me.

We’ve had colder weather and snow on the ground. Some of the street segments of my route don’t get plowed so I wear my boots and walk through a few inches of crusty packed snow. As long as it’s not icy and dangerous it’s fine with me. Will be a while until I can do the step ups on the dock/

I will do something indoors today perhaps the full body hasfit workout I have revisited.

I’m going skiing in a couple weeks for the first time since the pandemic started and think I’ll do well fitness wise.

Still here and doing my thing. But yesterday started our very long stint of pouring cold 30s* rain to ice until next weekend! Seriously?! We haven’t had a warm winter or a cold winter, but it’s been a VERY WET winter. I hope I have some decent immunity from my first shot, because I will likely be getting in some more gym time. I don’t run in 30* ice/cold rain. Blech. That being said, the gym (finally?!) put up some big signs indicating more clearly that masks should be worn throughout the gym at least. I didn’t see them enforcing it today, but it was pretty empty this morning. A longish stairmonster/bike stint followed by an Endurance and Agility video from The Work.

It is that time of year when those of us who live in cold weather are ready to pull out hair out.

We haven’t seen any temps north of 21 degrees or so for a couple of weeks. Our sidewalks are snow covered and icy and I’d like to clobber the people who can’t manage to arrange to clear their walks or their neighbors who can’t help the elderly (we live on a corner and literally do the walks on two blocks off of our property so we can walk the dog without feeling like we are taking our lives in our hands!!!)

That said, I haven’t run for nearly a week but have been closing my rings with walking, indoor cycling and videos of cardio and strength training. At this point a 35 degree day would be tropical.

As I said earlier likely indoor workout today with the cold weather. I plan to do something more strength training later, but DH wanted to do some stretching.

He asked me to pick, and I picked active stretching videos on fitness blender for upper and lower body. I had never done active stretching before, quite a difference from passive stretching! Quite challenging, not sure he will ask me to pick next time.

So cold and lost power yesterday. I’ve been riding the stationary bike while watching the impeachment trial.

Thanks for the input Fallgirl  I actually have been running a while. Started couch-2-5k winter 2017, and I’ve usually been able to run a few times a week since May 2017 (except 2 months off last summer). Usually I run 5k at our lake trail, with a rare 10k when weather seems perfect for it. But I do see the wisdom of easing up gradually, not being so random with the extra distance.

This summer and fall it was really fun to sometimes bike to the lake, since retired and more time. Then run 5k around it, then sometimes add a bike lap (or once 2 laps) before heading home. That seemed a good way to mix up things. But dressing right for that combo gets tougher in cold weather. (In summer I use a sacrificial thrift shop jacket and leave it with the bike.)

I’ve been getting some exercise every day, but I skipped yesterday. Today I hope to ride my bike for at least an hour, probably 2.

So…we had to be flexible this morning. Started at 8AM, freezing rain/sleet supposed to arrive 10:30-11:00. Well 2.5 miles in it started and the paved path we were running on quickly became slippery so we walked back for a total of 5 miles. I will try to make up the missed miles on the treadmill tomorrow. The good news is that we (4 of us) are now home and safe.

It has been pouring ice and rain since last night. More rain than ice, but it’s freezing to the trees and power lines. From the outage map, I’d guess 75% of our area is without power. Ours blipped but stayed on. But when I went to the post office, a huge tree limb broke off our maple and took down a line across the road feeding the apartments next door and was laying on the street. Called it in and was told I called the wrong number. That was for outages. He gave me the number to call instead - it was the one to pay my bill. Uh huh. Great. Fortunately it’s a main road, a fire truck drove by and stopped and it’s now cut off.

I did make it to the gym this morning. Did a long stairmonster session and stayed for abs. There were only two others there. Thought about lifting there, but went to the shed instead and did a workout I haven’t done in ages. Iso chisel strength. You don’t do many exercises, but each one you do 10 reps and hold in the hard position for 10 sec, then repeat two more times without breaks. Pull-ups are impossible. 10 pull-ups, 10 sec flexed arm hang repeat two more times with no dropping? Lol. Not happening in my lifetime. The young dude in the video could do it though. I’m not a young dude. I’m not even an old dude. I did my best. Lol

And my 86 y.o. FIL is supposed to get his vaccine today at 3. Please let him be able to make it. My SIL/BIL taking him. I’m sure they are out of power out in the county. CVS has a generator and is not canceling anything.

Hope your FIL gets to CVS safely.

Day 5 of cold rain/ice. This morning was the best in awhile, so I got outside. 34* and hazy mist with a wind that just made it feel like it was raining. It wasn’t the best run, but I was out there. The lifting portion was better, I guess. But I’m in a rotten mood. Today was supposed to be my day off all today myself. Schools are supposed to be in session. But since so many are still without power, they cancelled it. Now H is underfoot all day. I just wanted one day. I should be - and am - thankful that we never lost power and have heat. I just need some time to sulk before figuring out what we can do so H will be entertained and not bored/depressed.

Edit to say my mood is improving. And H is being good to just let me read and be cozy in my recliner. Reading all the comments about. People here being without power for 50+ hours and counting makes me thankful indeed

I feel so very fortunate here in NoVA when I saw the national weather this morning! It was a decent 34 degrees and little wind when I went out for a run. No expectations as to distance and I ended up doing 7 miles because I was feeling good.

I have been able to get some walks in, but not today it is raining and the ground is a slushy mess. I will do my indoor full body workout.

I also got the wii fit up and running after many many years of neglect. My wii fit age is four below my actual age, but it put me in the overweight category by a bit so that is a goal to get that setting down to normal. I did a few of the balance games.

I think balance games sound like a great idea! It seems really important as we age to avoid falling.

Sometimes I do knee lifts while brushing my teeth, but after a pilyoga class last week tried this leg position… which I could do other boring times too

Due to the frigid weather, I’ve been using our indoor training cycle. To start, low resistance - 15 min first day, then 20 min yesterday. Soon I can work my way up to 22 min (netflix Schitt’s Creek episode) then 30 min (Grace and Frankie). But today will be Zoom Zumba day.

We got a ton of ice on Saturday so my only exercise was 2 miles (to/from dinner) We took my daughter on a slightly modified version of one of our loops (3.6 miles) this morning before she headed back home…

It was a good weekend for me. I road @36, 36 and 19 miles on my bike. I was planning to spend the entire weekend in the house, but my son and his GF decided they were going to check out/buy bikes near me (finding bikes in the right size and what you’re looking for these days isn’t easy). So, they Ubered to the bike store near me, and she bought a bike. I picked them up and drove them home. (About an hour each way, plus the time in the bike shop).
I tell them they need to put me in a good nursing home BC I’m nice to them now

it will be another indoor workout day for me today. Since I did the full body workout yesterday and don’t want to repeat things, I’ll do more wii fit balance things and maybe the active stretching videos again
