Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Did a great indoor workout yesterday and frolicked in the snow. We got 7.5 inches, which is WILD for Texas. It would be more fun if so many of my friends and family weren’t on more than 40 hours of no power, some of that in single-digit temps. We are used to blackouts in 110-degree heat, but our houses and infrastructure aren’t built for this kind of cold. Thankful we’ve had power and water this whole time.

I had a good workout which was surprising after how I woke up. 3 days of being a slug does not make me want to jump back into the routine. Workouts aside, I barely got out of the recliner all long weekend.

Another cold Misty morning, so I went to the gym and did a long stairmonster/bike session that went well. Came home and had to do a double workout - select a workout from each trainer. I took the easy way out and did a 15 min core video but then I did the 50 rep Crucible workout. I did really well with it. Always have room for improvement, but my form was better throughout. Progress!

No power when it’s cold is super tough. Our 110 year old house isn’t built for it either. Anytime the temps go <20, I have to let my faucets drip. Our kitchen doesn’t have a heat source, so it can be in the 40s during cold spells even if the rest of the house has heat. I’ve had Magic Shell freeze in my cabinets! Good thing I don’t spend much time in there.

7 inches in a non snow area is a major weather event! Just texted my sister in Texas for an update.

We got a foot of snow overnight which is a lot even for Ohio. 90 minutes of moving snow on two different shifts is my exercise for the day.

The rain stopped here yesterday so I did get out for a walk, and to my surprise the docks were clear for my step ups. I didn’t notice until too late (well I could have turned around but didn’t) on the way out, but I did do them on the way back and it took some effort. The full body workout I had done the previous day still makes me sore (which is good) but DH did it along with me and is still moaning. He better be ready for skiing.

I did the active stretching this morning and am going to do some of the wii fit things and then will hopefully get a walk squeezed in because more snow is coming in another day or two. Maybe.

It was very cold here this morning and I really debated going outside. A phone call from a running buddy (who ran 5 this morning) as well as an opportunity to debut a new running jacket won out. Ran 3 miles at (for me) a fast pace. It was not bad once I got going.

Snow and ice are on the way so my trusty treadmill will not be lonely the next few days.

I also took advantage this morning. It was NOT raining/icing and the pavement had mostly dried out. My run didn’t feel great, but it was 30-45 sec/mile faster than Monday. I’ll take it. I also had a good prescribed double this morning. Strength and Power from The Prep and a cardio boxing type thing from Shaun T Max 30.

I’m strongly considering not bothering to wake up for tomorrow’s workout. Last time, the weather was iffy that I might make it to the gym. 31-32* and ice can easily mean the roads will be passable in the city, especially with few cars on the road… And they were. Now it’s supposed to be 28-30* and ice starting at midnight. Roads probably won’t be safe at 4:30am. I am just praying we don’t lose power, but I’m not optimistic . No way we will be lucky twice, and this one has more precip, it’ll be colder, and windier than last weekend. And nobody seems to be mentioning it around here, but the river is right at flood level - or it was this morning… This should be interesting. I’m actually home today doing an online class. It’s easier to concentrate than in a big room full of people. I told my boss, I would work at home until the roads were safe and if I had power. If I don’t, I’ll head in to the office. It’ll be warmer there. LOL. I guess that assumes they have power.

@ClassicMom98 - I hope you slept late and stayed safe… and kept power. I think it’s ok to skip workout now and then.

Of course it’s not great to skip it as much as me. I do have a tendency to just cherry pick the best running weather days. Yesterday the chance of rain (37 degrees) deterred me from running. I did compensate by walking 40 min and doing a few exercise videos, but in honesty some other bad weather days were just lazy days. It still feels good that my current habits (exercise and food) are sooo much better than they were 4 years ago, and my weight goal is met/maintained. So for you “light” and “very light” readers lurking here, know that it is worth making efforts, even if you can’t envision yourself ever being hardcore.

It is definitely worth it to do whatever you can whenever you can! I don’t think H will ever be “hardcore” but he has developed a habit of getting out for a good walk almost every day (he does skip some and that’s fine) as well as some changes in diet and he has lost quite a few pounds looks and feels great.

@ClassicMom98 - I think we are getting the same weather. It’s supposed to start snowing in the middle of the night and we should get a good bit (estimates vary) before we get ice. I will be getting up for tomorrow’s sunrise yoga class though.

Yep! But we won’t see any snow. Just ice. That is typical for us most years. We’ve had plenty of ice storms when it’s been 24-25 degrees even. If you love snow, this isn’t the place.

Good luck with your power!

The weather for soccer last night was pretty miserable. It was really cold and incredibly windy. The wind was blowing the corner flags pretty much straight out and was hard enough to move a soccer ball when it was sitting on the ground.

Game was good. I was close to 8K in steps.

This AM my wife couldn’t walk but I did a good 4 miles while listening to my IPod. It was still chilly but I’m glad I went.

We’ve got the same snow/ice coming tomorrow so who knows what tomorrow will look like

What part of the country are you @jmnva06 ? - for some reason I’ve pictured someplace a little more balmy that snow wouldn’t happen! (said Texas before this week…)

Indoor cycle this morning and a pup walk. What a surprise, it’s snowing again. Yesterday I was able to enjoy an actual walk later in the day on our neighborhood trail that was clear.

We’ve got freezing rain going. Good thing I didn’t try to go to the gym. They are closed. It’s supposed to last through tomorrow kid morning, so who knows what will happen tomorrow. I may try a shed workout if power holds, or I may just be lazy again. Down time is good for one’s health too, so I am enjoying it for now.

The roads don’t look too bad, but there’s ice hanging from the power lines already. Of course, the utilities company took down their outage map for “maintenance” yesterday.

@abasket – I live in the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC, so definitely not balmy, but also not frigid either. With proper layering, outside activity is generally OK most of the winter. There are really only a few times where the outside temperatures are so low that outside activity is miserable. The biggest issues is when we get ice/wintery mix that make it difficult to walk without slipping.

There are a few on this thread who live in that area!!!

And I am one of those people who live in the DC area! (NoVA suburbs)

Very icy out this morning so I ran a 3 mile speed workout on my treadmill. Did a yoga class on zoom at mid day. I am supposed to run a 10 miler tomorrow but am not sure how I will do that. I want to run outside but the sidewalks and trails are not all cleared so that means running in the street. I can do that in my own neighborhood but it means running the same streets repeatedly. It’s that or the treadmill.

The half marathon we were planning to run in April has been cancelled with no virtual option. My friends and I are bummed but we get why. We’re still planning to run our own 13.1 anyway. We mutually decided that immediately after we found out about the cancellation. We aren’t fast but we are determined!

@fallgirl-- bummer on the 1/2 getting cancelled.

My exercise tonight was 3 miles to dinner and 1.5 mile home. We went a local beer place. They have labeled it an outpost of their main facility a little further out. On the walk home, I had 64 oz growler and a 4-pack in my backpack so it was a little harder.

Our area did not get it as bad as feared. Most of the ice melted quickly. There were some power outages, including a good sized area 1/2 mile from me, but it was back up in four hours. There are still a few still out since last Saturday.

We are at a log cabin in a nearby state park for the weekend. No cell service anywhere near by! We drove an hour + over the mountain to our Alma mater to spend part of the day. The roads were pretty good but the higher elevations still have iced covered trees and patchy roads. We saw a bad looking accident probably <5 min after it happened but everyone seemed ok walking around and on phones.

Oh yeah, I ran for 50 min this morning. Was a bit rough. The hills were big. I found my groove about 40 min in, but then I was almost done. Lol.
